A public note to the Institute for Public Architecture: Pay-to-participate residencies are not opportunities — they are barriers. Asking artists to fund institutional programs reinforces class exclusion and normalizes unpaid cultural labor. Artists are workers, not customers. If public institutions care about equity, this model needs to end.
