I'm sure Mr. Scalzi knows this, but I think it bears saying: statistically, more science fiction was written for non-sf pulps than for sf pulps from 1926-1945.
In science fiction, so much of what is "classic" was essentially written for one man: John W. Campbell, the editor of the pre-eminent US SF magazine. Even the stuff published elsewhere, because it was often sent to him first. Think on what it means to have a whole genre filtered through one dude.

Side note: if anyone tries to set up heroes from the pulps as some kind of binary opposite to the heroes of deconstruction comics, that's a sure sign that they haven't read many pulps, don't know much about the sorts of characters that appeared in the pulps, and is talking through their hat.

There's a reason that I say that European pulps were better than American pulps. The American pulps gave you boring characters like the Moon Man and the Whirlwind and the Man in Purple. The European pulps gave you The Mysterious Doctor Funk. Q.E.D.

Me, writing a game: I should be writing pulps.
Me, publishing a game: I should be publishing pulps.
Me, marketing a game: I should be failing to sell pulps.

I’m packing my pulps to move to California. This is a daunting task. To keep myself moderately entertained I am going to post 4 random covers from each shelf I finish packing until I’m done.

the way the uk media apparatus fucking routinely pulps people until they commit suicide is really and truly something uniquely vile
cambridge used the guy to pretend that they gave a shit about diversity and then the racist hordes in the UK media hive used the guy to open a front against the entire premise of diversity and inclusion and now he’s dead. i really just don’t give a fuck about the ‘plagiarism’ claims

It’s official: in 2025, the Nebula Awards and @sfwa.bsky.social will recognize poetry as a new award category. Poetry has been a vital part of SFF from the earliest pulps. I’m so thrilled to see it recognized in this way.

"What were the pulps?

Cheaply printed, luridly illustrated, sensationally written magazines of fiction aimed at the lower and lower-middle classes.

Were they any good? No. They were great."
—Charles Beaumont, "The Bloody Pulps" in PLAYBOY (Sep 1962)
