The Last of Us tá logo ali no RJ

Purpureocillium atypicola takes down our largest spiders here with ease. 2 fresh victims and 2 spored out ones to compare.

Diversity is something you learn to love. The more different life all cluttered together, the greater the chance of seeing awesome #zombi #fungi #parasitoids like #purpureocillium

𝙋𝙪𝙧𝙥𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙪𝙢 𝙖𝙩𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙪𝙢: new zombie fungus that infects trapdoor spiders, covering them in a “fluffy” white coat of mycelium. Spores literally penetrate their exoskeleton 👀😳

Named top 10 species by Kew, and I agree!

A man cant even swing through the jungle on vines in peace these days, without having to stop and get out his camera to photograph #Purpureocillium atypicola!

Purpureocillium atypicola victims go from fluffy white, to plump powdery purplish, & then decay to leave an abandoned dirty spider shell. At least in the Anamorph form. Heres a "chest burster" sample, spot the empty scuttle fly pupae case inside :) The Teleomorph looks and hunts much differently.

I had 5 minutes to find a token zombie before suiting up. I didnt even need 1. And it was a stonker too :D nice huntsman spider host, monstered by #Purpureocillium atypicola. This is the Anamorph. The Teleomorph is a cool brown spike, that usually targets our primitive spiders in their holes.

First #entomopathogenic #fungi find today was a very elderly #purpureocillium on a spider. Yes, you always want to find a zombie fungi at its peak, the perfect fruiting.... but the trick is to find examples all along their life cycle, as they never not interesting. Only then can you id the random

Token #Zombie of the day, was this huntsmen #spider caught by vines. Perhaps an old #purpureocillium victim. But who knows what microbes now call it home? Well hopefully future me lol

The amount of spores #Purpureocillium #anamorphs produce is just insane! This one is on their locally preferred huntsman spider host. Usually found on tree trunks or cliff faces, sometimes on rushes or ferns. The sexual teleomorph state targets spiders in ground burrows like trapdoors.

Purpureocillium takamizusanense on a shield bug. It’s a kind of cordyceps. A fellow naturalist found this one. It’s interesting that some see insects and others see cordyceps. Tokikubo, Komoro, Nagano #Invertebrate #Insects #FungiFriends

When I first started hunting #zombie fungi, a legend in the field, Nigel Hywel Jones, gave me a heap of help & guru tips. One was that if you flip the leaf over & its damaged its not a zombie fungi.Which was true until I noticed #purpureocillium rots leaves. Always exceptions to rules with fungi.
