Pyrochroa coccinea, commonly known as the black-headed cardinal beetle, is a species of cardinal beetle in the family Pyrochroidae. It is found mainly in wooded areas and pastures throughout central Europe, including southern Great Britain. Similar to other species of Ambrosia beetles.

Very likely Pedilus terminalis. #Pyrochroidae beetles like this are still a bit of a mystery biologically. This one showed up after rain, feeding on something near a nail jutting from an old wood plank. Always a treat to spot one alive.

Remember toad-licking? (Some toads secrete a toxin containing a hallucinogen. Plus chemicals that make you violently ill. Don't lick toads.) Some fire-colored beetles (Pyrochroidae) lick toxic blister beetles. Not to get high (probably) but to pass the toxin to females who pass it to their eggs. 🐙🌿

Oh I do love a cardinal beetle (family Pyrochroidae)! I see Red-headed Cardinal Beetles (Pyrochroa serraticornis) most springs but last year I was fortunate to find Black-headed Cardinal Beetle (Pyrochroa coccinea) too - very few records of that one in Norfolk apparently.

the Pinto and Selander (1970) Meloe monograph has some great notes on this behavior, and later papers by Dan Young note that even collecting a blister beetle with your bare hands can attract pyrochroids to come nibble your fingers
excerpt from Pinto and Selander: "attacks of anthicids of the genus Pedilus [sic, currently placed in Pyrochroidae] on Meloe have been recorded by Say (1826) [...] the type specimen of P. impressus was found attached to the side of an adult Meloe angusticollis" Excerpt from Williams & Young (1990): "Five [Epicauta] murina were collected by grasping them with fingers and pushing them into vials [...] shortly thereafter, two P. lugubris landed on the dried hand and one of these chewed the tip of a finger."

One of the Fire-colored Beetles (Pyrochroidae) although in this case the fire seems to have gone out. Most species in the defunct family Pedilidae are now in the Pyrochroidae.

A genus endemic to New Zealand, with three species.

For those Pyrochroidae species where anything is known, the larvae live under the bark of dead trees, but may cannibalise their neighbours if too crowded.
