Meet Mama Pumpkin. She was found as a stray, struggling to survive with seven puppies. Once rescued, Pumpkin tested positive for Pythium, a deadly digestive infection. Thanks to you, her emergency care was covered and she's now recovering in foster. Pupdates to come ❤️‍🩹

We are heartbroken to share that Mama Pumpkin passed away. She developed complications from her Pythium infection, and treatment was no longer keeping her comfortable.

Thank you to her rescue, foster family, and our community for giving her a second chance. She will be greatly missed ❤️‍🩹

Фитопатология вообще отдельная тема моего увлечения.

Во-первых покупая цветочки обращайте внимание не их состояние. Если видите паутину, белый налет, то цветок заражен.

Most fungi are friends. :) BTW, probably most of the plant pathogens that people call "fungi" aren't actually fungi, but oomycetes (water moulds), which are no longer classed as fungi (they're very evolutionarily distant from them). Pythium, phytophthora, downy mildew, potato blight, etc- not fungi.

🌱

Planted in this garden today.

The first picture is from before I redesigned it, in 2018, and our team replanted. Eventually, the pythium that was the likely original problem with the lawn reasserted itself, and the owner requested the rocks. The neighbour's now-giant hedge is crazy-making.

Improved Survival in Vascular Pythiosis with Surgery and Azithromycin, Doxycycline, and Itraconazole Therapy: A Phase II Multicenter, Open-Label, Single-Arm Trial
Vascular pythiosis, caused by Pythium insidiosum, is a life-threatening disease with high mortality rate in patients with residual disease post-surgery. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a combination therapy of surgery, azithromycin, doxycycline, and itraconazole.

🌱Damping off a common problem with seedlings. Source is fungal, typically Rhizoctonia, Pythium, or Fusarium & could be container, soil, or seed borne. Combination approach: consider each vector. University of Minnesota Extension has excellent info & keep trying.😎

How to prevent seedling damping off
Damping off is a disease of seedlings and infected plants rarely survive to produce a vigorous plant. Quite often a large section or an entire tray of seedlings is killed.

Happy May Day eve from empty late-afternoon office!

What am I doing working late before holidays? Well, plating a few dozen Pythium samples from lettuce roots collected on Monday. @marikara.bsky.social shows a great example of possible symptoms: small roots and slow growth despite green color. 😊

And you have to be careful around mycoheterotrophs ;) Will your foes be pathogenic fungi and water moulds trying to kill your tree? But maybe if your tree gets healthy enough it can start to attract e.g. Trichoderma spp. and Pythium oligandrum to fight back ;)

Pythium keratitis: experience from Thailand
Pythium insidiosum keratitis is a rare but highly aggressive corneal infection that closely mimics fungal keratitis yet responds poorly to conventional antifungal therapy. Although previously under-recognised, it is increasingly reported in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly Southeast Asia, and is associated with high rates of therapeutic keratoplasty and globe loss. This review summarises current evidence on the epidemiology, risk factors, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnostic strategies and management of Pythium keratitis, with particular emphasis on data from endemic regions. The disease typically affects otherwise healthy individuals with antecedent ocular trauma, agricultural exposure or contact with contaminated water. Clinically, it is characterised by rapid progression, tentacular or reticular stromal infiltrates, early deep stromal involvement, and frequent limbal extension, often mimicking filamentous fungal keratitis. Definitive diagnosis requires a combination of direct microscopy with specialised staining, culture with zoospore induction, histopathology and molecular techniques, particularly PCR assays targeting the internal transcribed spacer region. The absence of ergosterol in the organism’s cell membrane renders antifungal agents largely ineffective. Emerging evidence supports targeted antibacterial therapy, especially linezolid- and azithromycin-based regimens, which have been associated with improved outcomes and reduced need for surgical intervention. Early recognition, organism-specific diagnosis and prompt initiation of appropriate therapy are essential to improve visual and anatomical outcomes in affected patients.
