I remember an early period where mostly it was a niche nerd thing few people knew about, like messing with ham radio
Followed by an explosion where EVERYONE was spontaneously online

Qbasic has no null and so eliminates the billion dollar mistake entirely *and* needed no manual memory management OR garbage collection
