Researchers at Nanjing University have made significant progress in quantum networking by demonstrating an asynchronous measurement-device-independent quantum cryptographic conferencing system (AMDI QCC). This system enables three users to establish a shared secure key without needing to trust a central measurement station, addressing two major challenges in developing practical quantum networks: maintaining key-generation rates as networks grow and reducing the complexity of controlling optical phases. The protocol overcomes limitations of conventional multiuser quantum conferencing, which relies on increasingly rare multiphoton coincidence events as network loss and user numbers rise. By pairing single-photon detections recorded at different times, the AMDI QCC protocol makes more efficient use of detected signals, improving key rate scaling with transmission loss. The experiment achieved secure key generation under approximately 59.6 dB of total system loss, a substantial improvement over the 21.5 dB achieved in earlier experiments. The researchers also developed a method to compensate for independent-laser frequency differences and fiber-phase drift without phase locking, using reference optical pulses and fast Fourier transform for phase estimation and compensation. This simplifies implementation by reducing dependence on complex phase control techniques. The demonstration represents a significant step toward practical, long-distance, multi-party quantum communication over optical fiber, with potential applications in secure government communications, defense systems, and future quantum internet infrastructure. The research, published in Physical Review Letters, provides a foundation for developing scalable quantum networks that can support secure group communications among many participants.
