This QLCS is becoming my "favorite" event of the year. After @bramvantveen.bsky.social's radar report and getting a video from renowned storm chaser Dean Gill, I think we have found tornadoes n. 5 and 6, which is quite the achievement for Italy!
Then the day after we got one of the most interesting events I've worked so far: a long-lived QLCS producing multiple tornadic mesovorticies (4 tornadoes confirmed) across north-central Italy, one of these with an IF2 tornado which impacted the Mantua province

Work continues on analyzing the tornado outbreak of August 19. 11 of the 12 confirmed tornadoes (including at least five significant IF2+ tornadoes) are attributed to one QLCS with multiple meso and bookend vortices. 13 suspected cases are still under investigation.

It's getting crowded! So far, 12 tornadoes from the 19 August outbreak have been confirmed, 13 cases are still under invest. Today, a member of @torkud-de.bsky.social will conduct site surveys for several cases in Thuringia. Any additional input is still very welcome! torex.team/2026/08/122-...

August 31st, 2014:

A powerful quasi-linear convective system (QLCS) impacted much of Iowa. Examination of high-resolution satellite data revealed a set of 111 damage tracks along the squall's 200+ mile path. A study confirmed 35 of these tracks to be weak tornadoes.

The Weather Scene: Every Type Of Tornado Explained – From Wedges To Bird Farts
Welcome to The Weather Scene segment! Each week here on Geek Alabama, The Weather Scene will feature weather related content. Editor / publisher Nathan Young loves weather related content. And this segment will feature something about the weather every week. How many different types of tornadoes are there? Over the years, I've managed to document every type of tornado—from massive wedges and landspouts to satellite tornadoes, anticyclonic tornadoes, QLCS tornadoes, and multiple-vortex tornadoes. In this video, we'll explore how tornadoes are classified, including the two broad categories of mesocyclonic and non-mesocyclonic tornadoes, and how their behavior, location within a storm, and appearance can vary dramatically.

My research focuses on the dynamics/prediction of severe weather - such as QLCS tornado prediction, TC supercells, and storm-socioeconomic vulnerabilities. Out of work, I love cooking/baking, watching movies and sports, and antiquing!

Come back tomorrow to hear about my 1st PhD student 👀 (2/2)

We had a strong tornado in France today, moving through Pomas, with a clear TDS and debris ball. Besides this one, we had another highly likely TDS a bit farther east, southwest of Montlaur @corentinaugris.bsky.social . Additionally, many mesovortices were apparent in the subsequent QLCS.

🌪️Why no Tornado Warning or sirens? 🌪️

QLCS tornadoes can be very shallow, short-lived spin-ups. This one developed within a storm producing 82 mph winds. Because they form so quickly and close to the ground, radar may not detect the rotation in time.

🌪️Did you know not all tornadoes form the same way? 🌪️

Ohio got the lesser-known kind this week: a QLCS tornado. Unlike the classic supercell tornado, QLCS tornadoes can spin up very quickly along a line of intense thunderstorms.

So many tornado warning takes, so little time but I've always wished the the criteria for warnings was stricter so that QLCS, shelf gustnados, and other brief spin-ups are covered by SVR

Quite a slab of stable air in place within the lowest kilometer across Central Indiana. But, QLCSs are known to do weird things. I'm interested in the QLCS spin-up tornado risk across southwest and southern Indiana, closer to the boundary.

From sharing QLCS research for the 1st time as a UND professor, to spending quality time with my Coriolis family, and many other moments, I am filled with true hope for an otherwise uncertain future. To all those whom I crossed paths with this week, thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️ (2/2)

Amazing work by Maddy Diedrichsen successfully used this framework to diagnose rapid thermodynamic evolution ahead of a tornadic, cold-season QLCS.

It's been *really* exciting to see just how well this system can be leveraged to conduct this type of novel work.

Today is the 9th anniversary of an infamous tornado: The EF-2 QLCS tornado that rapidly spun up right in the heart of Tulsa in the middle of a hot August night!

That was one of four rare August tornadoes across eastern Oklahoma that night. More info on This Week In Weather: youtu.be/_Z8FUfursjk?...

High-Shear, Low-CAPE (HSLC) events can be some of the trickiest to forecast, particularly like the tornadic QLCS that impacted parts of OK on 26 Feb 2023. Madeline Diedrichsen’s talk at 2:30 PM looks into whether or not downscaled WoFS forecasts combined with more frequent DA helps predictability.

I had the honor earlier today to present at the last @nws.noaa.gov Foundation Friday webinar diving into the evolving landscape of QLCS mesovortex prediction. Hoping this is just the beginning of many future discussions on how to advance QLCS hazard forecasting and extend lead time ⛈️
