#QModem
The maker of QModem has died. He worked at Wildcat! BBS (Mustang Software) for a time. I ran a multiline Wildcat BBS on DesqView and later OS/2 Warp for years. Today, my boss at Microsoft is the author of Wildcat BBS! Stay in this business long enough and you’ll meet tons of lovely and smart people.

John Friel, creator of the Qmodem terminal software (initially for MS-DOS) has passed away. #BBS #BBSing
My dad's work in the early internet days affected so many people. If you knew John Friel or just used his software to get online, please let me know, I want to know all of the people whose lives were touched.
It’s Friday.

You rush home from school and power up your family's 386, clicking the turbo button, hoping it will boot faster.

Firing up Qmodem, you dial your favorite BBS, "Baud to the Bone."

You hit "D" for Door Games.

Crimson red ANSI art fills your screen.

It's time for...

I do not know if any of you were QModem users during the DOS era, but its original author, John Friel III sadly passed away recently. His son has a notice up on Hacker news: news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4255...

Qmodem was a big deal for me as a nerdy teenager, living out in the country.

I was just a kid, and no expert, but Qmodem opened up a whole world for me! I’ll always be grateful :)

Sad. QModem played a big role when I was introduced to modems and BBSs.

I spent many hours with Qmodem dialing into a local BBS at 2400 baud.

Father of the QModem passed away. I remember these fondly. And that I realizes ages me quite a bit.

We were a Qmodem household and I used it up until the bitter end of my DOS days. Thank you :)

Oh that’s sad. I used Maximus BBS to host a multiline eventually under OS/2 as well. Fond memories and technologies like QModem were the building blocks of the BBS scene.

(I had posted something like this on HN as well...) I obtained Qmodem for DOS with a Gateway Telepath ( 14.4 kbps! ) modem in the early 90's. Qmodem was absolutely the best terminal software I'd ever used. I used it until local dialup BBS's went away.

If you've ever used Qmodem it's time to schedule a colonoscopy
