#Qalipu
"Caribou" is derived from the Mi'kmaq word "qalipu," meaning "snow shoveler." These animals use their hooves to dig for food in the snow.

Newdock (St. John’s Dockyard Ltd.) is expanding.
They are hoping to attract military/ice breaker etc contracts.
It is one of Canada's oldest shipyards and is now owned by Membertou First Nation, Qalipu First Nation and Horizon Naval Engineering.
Sorry FB was the only place I could find this other

This was a fantastic event today. I’m not Indigenous, but everyone was welcome. Mi’kmaw women were drumming and singing. They had medicinal plants on display, a rabbit skinning demonstration, and free moose stew and bannock. Thank you to Qalipu for being so welcoming. #Newfoundland

Caribou:
The name comes from the Mi'kmaq who called caribou xalibu/qalipu ("the one who paws"/"snow shoveler"). The Inuit word is Tuktu, while the Cree called the animal Atihk/Atik.

the qalipu pretendian hunters on instagram are hilarious. the way these white people hang up when heather, an actual 60s scoop survivor calls them out on their bullshit. why is canada giving white people rule over indigenous spaces without a lick of research into these people?

'i wouldn't accept anyone under 25%.' like go make me some maple syrup and stfu, big dawg. y'all got the qalipu stealing millions, worry about them not actual indigenous descendants who have lived experiences. y'all ain't god. lmao.

i'm sick of their asses too. they should be worried about their qalipu problem instead sticking their noses in our shit. then get mad at us because we don't move like that. between keeler, tallbear, the pretendian hunting is played out.

to be clear about "caribou":

mi'qmak "qalipu" went through a french filter before being anglicised

"makάlipo" is the penobscot equivalent

"mokalip*" is the passamaquoddy-wolastoqey

etc.

they're all cognate & the origin is obvious when you hear it spoken.

the qalipu are literally taking ojibwe ancestry from michigan and claiming métis up there. THAT'S harmful.
