#Quadratics
In #MathsToday, Year 10 did some Pie Charts, including some pie chart puzzles from: www.stem.org.uk/resources/li...

And Year 8 did some 'Best Buy'ing.

I also had a nice conversation about methods for factorising non-monic quadratics. #TeamGrid

In #MathsToday, Year 10 did some expanding and factorising of quadratics.

Lots of grids were drawn.

We had to learn this term in Australia but seeing this post reminded me that since moving here I've not mentioned definite quadratics at all
Almost at the end of #mathober but there's always time for an INDEFINITE QUADRATIC, which is today's prompt and here's a nice zine I made. Never heard of that meaning of "definite" before, but I guess it makes sense there'd be a term for it! PDF: https://katiesteckles.co.uk/mo27

The flattened cubic is going to be a piecewise connected quadratic spline. Thus adjacent quadratics will have a point in common. Therefore I need that calculations concerning that point be done in a precision higher than the point itself.

I used to love quadratics but I was lucky: my elementary school was picked as a "typical blue collar school" for experimental New Math studies. I was changing oil & doing light maintenance on our car years before I learned to drive. But not losing things...that's up there with not forgetting things.

In #MathsToday I went slightly mad and described quadratics that don't equal zero as "having no rizz". At least they remembered it?

Also started chanting frequency polygon (midpoint, frequency). Yr 11 mocks frying my brain.

Yr11 have been looking at quadratics as a whole, turning points, roots and Y-Intercept. They definitely need more practice but they are getting there.

I wrote a program to do quadratics on my Atari 400. It didn't work well, because I didn't have a good understanding of the issue (and was just learning to code!), but someone else could have written on that did work correctly.

The intended solution method is definitely unspecified! I think it can be done in a (fairly) elementary way with a bit of knowledge of quadratics/discriminants, but I also considered rotating to make the axes of symmetry parallel to the coordinate axes.

And I like @mqb2766.bsky.social's method too!

Oh, I see what you mean. Yeah. The point is that the only quantization here is for the fact that we're rendering this on a pixel grid, and not being turned into a mesh, first.

The internal representation is a system of equations with quadratics. So they *are* vectors until rendered. XD

In #MathsToday was a second delivery of my quadratics in disguise lesson, this time to the non further-maths class. Also included this time around were tricky quadratic substitutions into quartic equations - with thanks to @bewilda.bsky.social.
