QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE ANALYSISSSSSSS

this is where i think longwell's qualitative methods are actually quite useful. she remarks that when people talk about the economy, they also *constantly* refer to a feeling of powerlessness.

i think this is key.

i think there's a qualitative difference between "political figure dies" and "random people die".

We have to talk to people.

We need Qualitative data

We need the standards shaped by Internet sentiment from racially undiverse spaces

We need the cultural studies back
Then again, using models for previous elections for new elections where there are huge difference in the overall environment doesn't work well - unsurprisingly, but that's hard to fix. We never had a situation exactly like this before.

"Pro-business" in Dallas has typically meant open season on corruption, cronyism, and the worst possible business practices rather than a qualitative approach that enables and streamlines good business distinguished from bad if not illegal business.

This election followed the normal thermostatic pattern, where moving policy rightward leads to Democratic gains (my early estimates). The extent of gains exceeded prior elections, but is consistent with our qualitative interpretation of prior waves:

In qualitative work, there’s a big line between repeating back something the participant has said to indicate you know they’ve discussed it and speculating for 30 seconds about what they’ll say to you.
If you watched this and didn’t already know who was supposed to be the well prepared 60 Minutes correspondent and who was the nervous wreck being interviewed you’d assume it would cut back to Abdul being like “Ross cut off the interview and did not respond to further email requests”
Bari Weiss's resident hack Ross Douthat made a complete fool of himself on 60 Minutes, trying to claim the Saudi lobby has the same grip on Washington as AIPAC. Abdul El-Sayed immediately crushed him: 'AIPAC spent $33 million against me alone! Name another lobby doing that.' It has to make sense!🗳️🌊

Dear Elsevier
Given that this is a qualitative journal, did it ever occur to you to include some open-ended methods to capture why so many of us are losing the will to live when it comes to academic peer review?

We really can't let them chalk it all up to Trump the same way 2008 was credited entirely to Obama's rizz over the observable qualitative difference the 50 State Strategy made in campaigning

I forget who said this but the qualitative gap between Waititi’s New Zealand films and his American work is proof that over here we have debilitatingly better cocaine.

I’m piloting a Qualitative Research Collaboratory w/some incredible colleagues to answer just these kinds of questions.Polls are fine, but they can’t tell us how people are reasoning & they can’t collect data on stuff they haven’t asked about. We need to just ask people questions and let them talk.
as grateful as I am for poll questions about discrete categories of political grievance we should invent a way of studying public opinion that involves followup questions
i find it troubling the extent to which the progressive commentariat has settled on "this was an economy election." "this was about inflation."

yes, people express extreme anger about the economy. but they are voting like trump just re-started the great depression. this should strike you as odd!

*cough * qualitative/ethnographic semi-structured interviews *cough *
Was talking with a friend about this—it's going to be an impossible challenge for social scientists to separate candidate quality effects from national partisan wave effects in the Senate, because the the median swing Senate race pitted a terrific D candidate against an unbelievably bad R candidate.

There’s a qualitative difference between the two threads. Last year’s is entertaining and practical, this year’s is meaningful and heartfelt.
There a book in this, I shall encourage others to buy it.
