Steve Case, the Face That Launched a Billion Floppy Disks, appeared on "Computer Chronicles" in 1987 to demonstrate "QuantumLink," the C64-based ancestor of America Online.

The Second Life of its day: Lucasfilm's Habitat (1986-1988)

Lucasfilm were one of the companies at the cutting edge of computer game software, and pioneering some really cool stuff, such as this social MMO for the Commodore 64 available via the QuantumLink service.

I think you mean QuantumLink. More AOL, less Scott Bakula :)

I was on QuantumLink on my Commodore 64 - which was the company that became AOL

Huh. I was hanging out in the Star Trek forums on Q-Link (QuantumLink) so didn't try Prodigy. (Later I was on GEnie.)

My mother met her second husband in 1987 in a chatroom, on QuantumLink, using a 2400 baud modem and a Commodore 64.

The first time I went online was using a 300 Baud Vicmodem with a Commodore 64 to dial in to QuantumLink (a.k.a. Q-Link) where I mostly talked about Star Trek with people. Had a long curly phone cord stretched awkwardly across the hallway between kitchen and den.

This website is a work of art.

Not since the heady days of QuantumLink on the Commodore 64 has there been such platonically ideal navigation.

How old am I? I used QuantumLink. On a Commodore 64.

CompuServe was great, but if you had a Commodore 64, QuantumLink was the bomb because it was in color (and had real user names).

Do wish I was born sooner to experience stuff like BBSes, Fidonet and quantumlink.
I think it means you're one of the internet OGs. Maybe post-eternal September, but still here in time for the party.

RT @coldacid: Not the Bioware game, the original one on QuantumLink/AOL using the Gold Box engine. It was classified as an MMO.

Sadly I can't log into the reverse-engineered QuantumLink server, on either the C64U or with VICE. I can see the same "TERMINAL>" prompt that I get with telnet, so I know the serial link works, and then I get two "-" characters instead of one, but no further. 1200baud.wordpress.com/q-link-reloa...

Downloaded my tweets, deleted them, and deactivated my account. In a month or two, I'll think of Twitter the way I think about MySpace. Or AOL. Or Quantumlink, Compuserve, Prodigy... even bix.

How old are you in Internet years without telling us your age?
August 9, 2024 at 3:13 PM
Memories! <3

Before the commercialization of the internet, QuantumLink was popularizing smilies/emoticons to a large non-technical audience through People Connection from '85 to '89. :-)

Scott Fahlman launched a cultural phenomenon in 1982! And Steve Case unwittingly turbo-charged it! :-D
Absolutely! In college in about 1995? 96?I wrote a very short essay about the vital social role of text emoticons in online communication. Punctuation on the internet hasn’t been punctuation since the start. 😁
