Automakers switched from using R12 to R134a because of environmental concerns. More recently, they've moved on from R134a to R1234yf for similar reasons.

Having a set of R134a gauges and a couple spare cans on hand is probably one of the best things I have ever done. Most oldAC systems not working is a slow leak.

* J’écris « vieux » ici car les chiffres de l’Ademe sur lesquels je me base pour la comparaison partent du principe que ça serait un climatiseur au R134a, alors qu’en 2025 ça n’existe quasiment plus sur le marché — ils utilisent tous du propane (R290) qui est 400 fois (!!!) moins réchauffant.

The system hadn't run in probably 15 years, so I was anticipating having to replace all the hoses and the receiver drier and the compressor, but it turned out to be an "easy" R12 -> R134a conversion. There was still some old R12 in the system and the circuit held vacuum, seemingly never opened up.

Schrader valve tool on the way. Will try and retrofit the Bigcat's A/C system to R134a ports and take it someplace to see if the system will vacuum down, and I'll know if I'll be able to have working A/C soon.

then we repaced r134a with r600a (under duress for greenhouse)
thing is r600a is propane/isobutane AKA Camping Gas!
It was there all along just in the next isle 😜
and refrigeration efficiency has improved!!!

you could charge it with R134a or R1234yf instead, which aren't really flammable (R1234yf is classified as flammable but the conditions required are less "touches open flame" and more "touches red hot surface"). it's just a pain to get in the UK
