TX RCMAR logo, photo of Mica May 27th at 3PM via Zoom Abstract: In the face of unprecedented population aging, the need for nuanced understandings of how dementia is experienced and cared for has become essential. This presentation provides an overview of my dissertation project that explores emergent understandings of dementia and personhood in home-based care for older adults with early-stage dementia. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted in San Antonio, Texas, I examine how home-based care—as a site of intersecting models of dementia, constructions of personhood, and lived experiences—might negotiate personhood for those with dementia. By attending to early-stage dementia, the research attunes to a context of potential transition and disruption in ways of thinking, knowing, and being in the world. With the research situated in this context, I discuss how in-depth and narrative interviews, participant observation, and video recording might capture and lend insight into how dominant U.S. cultural constructions of dementia and personhood are mediated through home-based dementia care. In doing so, this presentation offers an opportunity to rethink dementia and personhood and exemplifies how ethnographic methodologies may reveal richer understandings of the lived realities of those with dementia.
