#RECCAP2 paper alert, Jemma Wadham led the polar chapter, summarizing knowns and (large) unknowns of carbon stocks and fluxes from ice sheets to land fringes, fjords, 🌊 oceans and sediments.🧪 Excellent reference starting point for future work.

An Ice Sheet‐to‐Ocean Analysis of Carbon Stores and Fluxes in Earth's Polar Regions (RECCAP2, Polar Ice Sheets)
Polar ice sheets, land fringes and oceans host vast carbon reserves (>10,000 billion tonnes, Gt) but with high uncertainty Polar ice sheets and their surrounding oceans are likely net sinks for C...

Time for a first post today as the #RECCAP #Southern Ocean chapter came out today - only four years and seven months after the first #RECCAP2 meeting in Gotemba!

We characterise the carbon sink in terms of mean, seasonal cycle, trends and storage.

Don't miss the thread by @jens-d-mueller.bsky.social on regional ocean carbon cycle assessments and processes aka #RECCAP2 results.

Rodgers et al. found that the seasonal amplitude of air-sea CO₂ fluxes increased over the past decades. We also show that the surface ocean DIC seasonality in biogeochemical ocean models is lower than in observation-based products. Something to improve…

Does any here have an idea why the #RECCAP2 (and GCB) hindcast ocean models accumulate less heat than the observation-based estimates suggest?
The underestimation of the transient warming is a factor of 2 to 3. Similarly, ocean deoxygenation due to ocean warming is also underestimated by a factor of 3 to 5 (www.nature.com/articles/s41...). It is hence also likely that natural carbon loss due to ocean warming is highly underestimated.

[8/10]

Doney et al. revisited the biological carbon pump and found that the model–based export production fell at the lower end of observational estimates, suggesting that models underestimate the biological drawdown and air-sea fluxes of CO₂ in high productivity regions.

During #RECCAP2, we have found a few reasons that show why ocean models in hindcast mode underestimate the ocean carbon sink, some are due to the setup and some due to physics and biogeochemistry (agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10....).

This is a complex region that no one other than Atul Jian could have successfully led, along with a great team of coauthors. The work is a contribution to the Global Carbon Project—REgional Carbon Cycle Assessment and Processes-2 (RECCAP2).

Pérez et al. assessed the important CO₂ sink in the Atlantic Ocean. A major fraction of this CO₂ uptake is realised in the subpolar North Atlantic, where models and observation-based estimates still differ substantially with respect to trends and seasonality.

Yasunaka et al. unravelled the exceptional role of climate change for the CO₂ sink in the Arctic Ocean. Here, the accelerated CO₂ uptake is primarily caused by sea ice loss, whereas rising atmospheric CO₂ dominates the trends in all other #RECCAP2 regions.

We provided recommendations of how to improve model estimates but implementing those improvements will take time and needs to be carefully done. Until then, the GOBM estimates remain useful but unfortunately also imperfect to estimate the current ocean carbon sink.
