During Covid, air pollution dropped — but methane levels rose.
Now we know why: a temporary spike in atmospheric methane driven by both atmospheric chemistry and climate‑related natural emissions.

In the RECCAP Southern Ocean chapter, we showed that surface temperature trends and thermal drivers of air-sea CO2 flux are quite well represented. Temperature effects on stratification are a different Q.

One of the #RECCAP chapters where I learned most 🔽
e.g.
"The seasonal amplitude of the CO2 flux is 50%–100% larger in the models at mid-latitudes (despite having a similar phasing, i.e., stronger sink in winter and spring)."

Knowing about the specific biases is necessary to improve them.

#RECCAP global coastal ocean carbon sink chapter published, led by Laure Resplandy:

doi.org/10.1029/2023...

The chapter includes budgets for methane and nitrous oxide and concludes: Coastal nitrous oxide and methane emissions offset 30%–60% of the CO₂ coastal uptake in the net radiative balance.

And finally, anyone who is eagerly following the RECCAP publications with detailed regional (ocean) carbon assessments, now gets updated numbers for the RECCAP regions in the GCB paper.

Of course, all the details and explanations you can only find in the RECCAP papers, so go and get them :)

Time for a first post today as the #RECCAP #Southern Ocean chapter came out today - only four years and seven months after the first #RECCAP2 meeting in Gotemba!

We characterise the carbon sink in terms of mean, seasonal cycle, trends and storage.
