#ROK-#DPRK
the US dropped more bombs on the dprk during the korean war than it did in the entire pacific theatre of WW2. the US obliterated huge amounts of civilian infrastructure. "rok is better to live in than dprk" is at least in part because of american war crimes.

Enough casualties to build a special housing district. ROK estimates DPRK suffered 6,000 casualties fighting in Ukraine.

여기가 ROK야 DPRK야 진짜.
January 4, 2025 at 8:43 PM
There's a kind of tech surrealism to the grainy camcorder footage of combat with the DPRK after the war, outside of the normal battlefields so it's in the dark forests, cold skies or deep underground

Anime about a future war between a woman run DPRK and a hypermisogynist RoK
September 3, 2025 at 9:10 PM
ROK has *always* known that.

It's a big part of why the US has to keep shortcircuiting Korean moves to build their own nukes (to counter the DPRK nukes) ... ROK isn't expecting to be able to rely on US defending the Korean peninsula.

Hold on - you're a professional political scientist. How do you not know the similarities between the authoritarian tendencies of the DPRK & ROK?

You know that South Korea only fully democratized in 1988, right? You know the last impeached ROK president was the granddaughter of a dictator, right?

“Don’t even try”

Rare example where Pyongyang was doveish while Seoul balled out, genuinely a remarkable achievement in modern ROK-DPRK relations.
January 20, 2026 at 10:37 PM
This alongside another liberal attempt at detente with the DPRK will most likely go nowhere until the ROK is atleast armed with nuclear weapons
September 27, 2026 at 12:13 AM
right its actually perfectly plausible to imagine scenarios where democratisation happens in DPRK/PRC and does not happen in ROK/Taiwan
February 22, 2026 at 1:39 AM
ROK and DPRK reach historic agreement to leave him in that minefield.
November 16, 2024 at 12:38 AM
Spare a thought for a 707th being asked to capture high-value targets - but instead of DPRK it was ROK NA members.

A Plan for Humane Deterrence

North Korea suffers daily: starvation, parasites, slavery under DPRK rule. China props the regime up, not out of compassion, but because NK is a buffer against U.S./ROK forces. This cruelty persists only because it’s geopolitically convenient for Beijing. 🧵 1/15

If you’re China, do you just say “fuck it, we’re going in” at that point because the ROK and USA spontaneously turned into the Joker and DPRK is going to let the nukes fly once it becomes clear the regime will fall?
March 5, 2025 at 1:36 AM
this further heightened the famine the country was going thru thanks to the collapse of the USSR. and its worth remembering that in the 80s, the DPRK had a higher GDP than the ROK. like all third world countries, DPRK is impoverished by exterior forces, not thru internal malice
August 17, 2026 at 7:39 PM
Fun fact: Due to that time the South Koreans cancelled some of post-Soviet Russia’s debts in exchange for some BMP-3s and T-80Us, the ROK actually has more advanced Russian weapons than the DPRK.

Might be short lived if ROK gets mad enough about the RU-DPRK alliance to give them to Ukraine.
June 28, 2024 at 12:06 PM
has indirectly negative effects for ROK too bc its a source of modern warfare immersion for DPRK spetsnaz equivalent units
February 6, 2025 at 10:07 PM
If the DPRK and the RoK were equally invested in supplying opposite sides of this war, the US could probably sit out and Ukraine would do fine
⏺ Russians began training on North Korean howitzers, - partisans

This demonstrates that Russia cannot independently produce and repair its own heavy weapons in the required quantities. It also shows that the role of the DPRK in Russia's war against Ukraine has increased.

DPRK fires missiles into the sea. No info given on type or flight time or apogee when I last read.

4th missile test in April of 7 this year.

Trump has consistently downplayed DPRK missile testing since 2019 & to extent of hampering ROK & UN efforts to slow/prevent DPRK missile development

Trump’s policy towards the DPRK was on the same wave length as its leadership ie it was all about a photo op for domestic audiences and nothing more. Throw in a humiliation ritual for the ROK liberals as they see their efforts reunify the nation once again come to nothing as a treat of course
My experience watching Trump "negotiate" with Kim Jong Un was: Kim never offered to disarm, Pompeo would wishcast disarmament, lots of media would amplify, a couple of summits happened, but no deal emerged ... leaving Kim stronger than before. Maybe this time is different.
April 8, 2026 at 7:34 PM
there is a lot to be said about the industry of DPRK defectors being hired by ROK outlets that work closely with the USA to inflate and hyperbolize their experiences via the media as an extension of propaganda; see Yeonmi Park
August 17, 2026 at 5:07 PM
Given the reported casualties in those DPRK troops (~2k KIA and 2.7k WIA out of ~11k troops per ROK intelligence) it's not clear how "highly skilled" they actually were.
