i'm not the biggest into mario but as a kid i played a bunch of mario world and mario world romhacks and i always found the hacks so distinct and unique in presentation, i remember how many hack levels felt so wistful and melancholic in a way. they loved using jrpg music

Even modding can be tightly focused, though. There are plenty of ROMhacks out there that were made without consulting a full disassembly of any kind, much less a fully-annotated matching decomp.

I also got a really big hyperfixation towards failed 16 bit mascot platformers from the 90’s and began to get into Sonic a lot more during that time and played an ton of sonic romhacks during the time, Kirby planet robobot was also a cool game too, even if it isn’t one of my favorites

Isn't there some way to play romhacks on the og hardware? (Genuinely asking I have no idea, I'm only familiar with playing romhacks on gameboy or emulators for other consoles)

I swear in like 20 years we’re gonna be able to emulate NS2 games and be able to make romhacks for certain games. Cause it’s already been done for other games such as NSMB.

Haha for sure lol! Slow and steady. And even just starting at the beginning is always worthwhile (although there are quality of life romhacks and those can help ease into it as well).

Amy in Sonic 1, 2 and 3.
Just some delightful romhacks porting Amy into these games. I think 1 pushes the sonic advance side the most, and feels the best of the bunch. For 2 and 3 it was just "oh this is neat" but for 1, while it arguably made the game too easy, it was more fun.

looking into Other M romhacks and there's some interesting stuff here, but I'm not fucking with some of the stuff the two major ones do

yeah as far as I know people could already make romhacks? I kinda get why you'd do something like this in the abstract but I don't feel like Pokemon is a particularly useful place to try it
