So I started a blog. If you’re interested in solo ttrpg games, check it out. It’s still new and I don’t have many posts yet, but there’ll be reviews, and playthroughs in a storytelling mode.
This post in particular is directed at those who would like to try solo games but don’t know where to start.

Old School isn’t what it used to be and that’s kind of the point. From Shadowdark to MÖRK BORG, the OSR has fractured into something stranger and more interesting. A look at the post-OSR identity crisis and what “old school” even means now.

The “Post-OSR(evival)” Identity Crisis
Welcome back everyone, I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and a great start of the year! As for us, both me and Yuno managed to catch a cold right before our exam session so things could be better. But nonetheless, I wanted to take some time to write this article to relax my brain a bit before delving right into uni projects and my dissertation.

At the current rate of views, some time in the next month or so I'll have reached over 1.5 million views on my blog... so that's something.

Johnny Nine-Fingers returns from the World of Two Moons with news of psychic powers, pointy ears, and zero fireballs. My dive into ElfQuest RPG’s magic system is live – come for the chaos, stay for the Sending. 🧠✨ #ElfQuest #RPGBlog #OneManAndHisDice
Mind Over Magic
Johnny Nine-Fingers returned smelling of moss and burnt hair, eyes wide like he’d glimpsed the soul of a houseplant. “Magic?” he rasped, slamming down a scorched notebook. “It ain’t spells, it’s feelings. They don’t cast, they emote.” I nodded slowly, pen in hand. Another system, another aneurysm.

VtM didn't invent its iconic take on vampires alone. Anne Rice played perhaps the biggest role in that — White Wolf just never said so. 🧛📖 A critical look at the unacknowledged debt behind your favorite RPG.

The Book That Built the World of Darkness (Whether White Wolf Admits It or Not)
There is a version of Vampire: The Masquerade that does not exist. In that version, the vampire is still fundamentally a predator. Gothic, certainly. Brooding, perhaps. But essentially a monster: something took directly from folklore, something cold and inhuman that wears a human face as a disguise. That version of the vampire has a long literary history - Stoker's Dracula…

VtM vs VtR isn't about which game is better. It's about which horror you believe in - the corruption of institutions, or the erosion of the self. Macro dread vs micro dread. The new piece on The RPG Gazette breaks it down.

A Tale of Two Vampires: What Requiem Understood That Masquerade Couldn’t
I think it is somewhat fair to say that the break between the original World of Darkness (oWoD) and its 2004 reboot, Chronicles of Darkness (nWoD), is one of the most debated divisions in tabletop RPG history. The original line's fans see the reboot as a betrayal to the original setting they hold dear, while Chronicles of Darkness fans point to tighter mechanics, neater lore, and a more focused horror vision.

According "Antisemitism & the Origin of the Lich's Phylactery" it seems that phylacteries got grafted on after the Lich was added to D&D. It's not clear how much game designers or players understood how an undead cleric wearing phylacteries was Jew coding gdorn.circuitlocution.com/rpgblog/hist...

Your campaign will be forgotten. No recording captures it, no transcript preserves it. And that's exactly what makes it matter. TTRPGs are oral literature - ephemeral, communal, and more alive for it. 🎲📖

The TTRPG as Oral Literature: Storytelling, Memory, and the Ephemeral Campaign
Around this time last year, I wrote what is one of my favorite articles from the blog. An article about why TTRPGs feel so special to me. And part of the argument rested on the idea that these games belong to the tradition of folk art: communal, informal, passed hand to hand through enthusiasm rather than institution, truly alive only in the act of doing them.

"Modern D&D has no endgame. BECMI did. Five boxes, thirty-six levels, and then godhood. Frank Mentzer built a complete arc for the campaign in 1983. Forty years later, we are still asking the same questions he answered.

The Five Boxes: BECMI and the High-Level Problem That D&D Never Solved
Almost every edition of D&D has an endgame problem. How it goes usually is that characters gain levels, accumulate power, and eventually reach a point where the game's original structures, dungeons, monsters, treasure, kinda stop making sense from both a narrative and a mechanical standpoint. At the end of the day what do you do with a character who has cleared every dungeon, killed every dragon, and accumulated more gold than most kingdoms?
