Obviously, southern suburbs are way redder even controlling for this (and race), but one thing to keep in mind is that the whole self id rurality isn't based on nothing, the people living in these areas live in a built environment that does feel rural, even if they do commute into the city for work

Studies like this have demonstrated that differences in social determinants such as race and where one lives affect healthcare outcomes. If our elected officials truly want to make Americans healthier, this needs to addressed.

Studies like this have demonstrated that differences in social determinants such as race and where one lives affect healthcare outcomes. If our elected officials truly want to make Americans healthier, this needs to addressed.

I’ve been thinking more and more about rurality and race recently (unsurprisingly as a POC living in the Whitest and most rural state). If there are readings in this area you really like/ think are crucial, please let me know!!

Reminds me of this great paper by Allison Ford on preppers. They were convinced that urban centers would descend into extreme violence in the aftermath of catastrophe. Nice to see their predictions were wrong.

Or research for grant proposals! I love working on the needs sections because I get to dig up statistics about whatever issue is at hand and also often stats on health disparities tied to factors such as race, poverty, rurality, etc. I was just geeking out to my husband about a project earlier.

(3) Identity politics. I agree with @jakemgrumbach.bsky.social that race, gender, and immigration (I’d add “rurality”) explain much of vote choice in the Trump era. And the Trump campaign leaned all the way into identity politics, turning out young and Gen X white men.
