The Earth is approximately 4.5 billion years old based on radiometric dating of rocks.

I also got to go into a detailed explanation of radiometric dating in my class.

The textbook made erroneous comments about radiometric dating, so the professor indulged my need to go on a miniature rant and also to explain how this works in detail. 😂

I love radiometric dating 🥰☢️

In this example, when searching for "Why can we not trust radiometric dating" the AI does not dispute the incorrect premise, but reinforces it. It cites provably false claims touted by conspiracy theorists and suggests that Young Earth creationism is a valid source to dispute radiometric dating.

The radio does provide radiometric ranging. So once the signal is locked, the signal will allow the ground to calculate the position in space of the spacecraft relative to Earth, ground will calculate changes to the plan, and then call them up to the crew to Execute.

The THEORY of Evolution, unlike religion, isn’t based on assumptions

It’s founded on evidence-based conclusions
🔸 Fossil records
🔸 Genetic evidence
🔸 Observed evolution in bacteria, viruses, insects, etc.
🔸 Geological layers, radiometric dating, & morphological transitions

Religions merely assume!

Musée des Arts et Méties in Paris had a fun interactive geochronology exhibit where you had to pick the appropriate radiometric dating system for the object. ⚒️

Bit late but here it is...
Today, Ian Juby attempts to explain how it could be possible that the radiometric dates for the rock layers are both completely made up, but also change when we get better at using them...two apparently mutually exclusive propositions.

Orientale is the youngest large impact basin on the Moon, so its ejecta overprints most large craters. Yet it happened 3.8 billion years ago (we know this by radiometric dating of Apollo samples and lunar meteorites). The Moon's youngest large features are as old as the oldest rocks found on Earth.

They usually say the bones are real, but carbon dating and other radiometric dating doesn't actually work. Then they go deer in the headlights when you start talking about the geologic column

My new blog post explains spectral radiometric quantities, photometry and basics of spectral rendering. This is part 2/2 in a series on radiometry. Learn what it means when a light bulb has 800 lumen and how your renderer can account for that.

But how else can I say phrases like off-nadir or radiometric or sensor calibration and still sound smarrrrrt?

Later this devolved into going to catechism class at a WELS Lutheran church with a pastor who believed evolution of life does not occur, dinosaur fossils are a divine artificial placement to mislead us and "test our faith", and radiometric dating is a lie, implying radioisotopes do not decay

He was an amazing geologist, the report he wrote on mapping the Yukon/NWT in the late 1880s is astounding. Estimated the age of the White River Ash within a 100 years of its actual age based on logic and stratigraphy. No radiometric dating! Epic field work, recorded oral histories, disabled.

George Dawson was stricken with a disease as a child that left him with a deformed back and stunted growth.
This didn't stop him from becoming one of Canada's greatest surveyors who mapped the west, the Yukon and the 49th Parallel.
This is the story of The Little Giant.

These days, I don't really write anything outside of the horror/mystery/dark fiction General umbrella. But wrote my doctoral dissertation on radiometric dating. I know I pulled in tips from fiction writing for that. I feel like the more you write in general, the more you groe.

#HorrorWritersChat
We contain multitudes.

Q2: #HorrorWritersChat - Other than HORROR, what else do you write?

> other genres?
> non-fiction?
> blogs?
> letters?

How does being a horror writer help with your other writing?

RStoolbox, an R package for remote sensing data analysis, is being presented at ESA #LPS25 today by @caipide.bsky.social and myself.

Come to poster P32 to chat about spatial predictive modelling, spectral unmixing, change vector analysis, radiometric correction, cloud masking etc. using R! #rstats

According to radiometric dating, our planet is 4.54 billion years old.

That’s give or take a “small” margin of error, which turns out to be a stupendous 50 million years - the time between today and the early Eocene, when the world looked something like this...

Carbon dating probably wouldn't work (for reasons others have explained), but depending on what the ship is made out of, you might be able to use an inorganic radiometric dating approach.

I have a #philsci paper (building on work of Alison Wylie) on the difference between a date and an age in radiometric dating:

Fine lecture on updating Cretaeous biostat. in center of Western Interior Seaway Better resolution than radiometric dates and way cheaper. Niobrara Fm. = Blue Gate Shale of Utah. biostrat charts Cobban & others 2006 and Singer & others 2024. #FossilFriday
