#Radiotelescope

yesterday was a satisfying day and not just because I commandeered the radiotelescope from the comfort of my home

sometimes I'm like... I need so little to be satisfied. why are the world AND myself so insistent on sabotaging it lol

This is huge. I remember working with the Lunar radiotelescope project and they described as a ground-breaking event if magnetic fields like those on Earth were to be detected. Amazing!

Canadian radio telescope detects distant hydrogen signal, advancing cosmological research
Astronomers using the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) radio telescope in Penticton, British Columbia, have achieved the most distant measurement of hydrogen distribution in the universe to date. The detection, published in the Astrophysical Journal, reveals hydrogen signals from approximately 8 billion light years away, providing new insights into how matter organized after the Big Bang. The CHIME telescope, operational since 2017, consists of trough-like antennas that passively gather radio waves as the Earth rotates, creating a comprehensive map of the radio sky. The team faced significant challenges, including filtering out radio noise from the Milky Way, which is up to ten thousand times stronger than the faint hydrogen signal they sought. They also had to contend with increasing human-generated radio interference from electronics in cars and personal devices. After analyzing data collected over 2,000 days, the researchers narrowed their focus to 94 days with ideal conditions, spending over two years verifying their findings. The detection supports existing models of large-scale cosmic structure and could eventually allow for direct measurement of the universe's expansion rate, providing an independent way to study dark energy. Dr. Mark Halpern, a University of British Columbia professor and principal investigator, emphasized that this measurement was the primary goal of the CHIME project. The findings have been praised by astrophysicists like Will Percival of the University of Waterloo, who called it a significant achievement given the difficulty of extracting such a faint signal from the data. This breakthrough represents a major step forward in understanding the universe's evolution and the role of dark energy in its expansion.

Quite a feat, especially considering how close planets are to their host stars!! 😳

Incredible resolution is required, here from the MeerKAT 📡 radiotelescope array, to distinguish planet from star.

A 🧵 by first author on the paper:
If @science.org is covering it, I guess I should share something here- we have for the first time definitively detected radio emission from a planet around another star! 🔭🧪🎢

What does this mean? Details in thread! (But TL;DR- still not aliens) 🧵
