It's a good day to repost the most beautiful view I've ever seen.

The view from the cabin where I am staying is amazing. Also hard to believe this is nearly 47 degrees south.

Yesterday I posted about my 44 year dream of seeing the albatross colony in Dunedin. My other dream that has been 44 years in the making has been to visit Rakiura, Aotearoa New Zealand’s third island.

I flew in this afternoon.

Tonight I am writing about hiking all night on Rakiura after two days of travel to get there, and ultimately encountering a Southern brown kiwi by starlight.

As I fill page after page, it occurs to me that writing requires a similar sort of courage and perseverance—and offers similar rewards.

Did you know you can see highlights from our #kakapo nestcam: www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...? In the last 24 hours we've seen a chick hatch and a rare short-tailed bat flying - and walking - around the nest. Exciting to see things never seen before! #conservation #kakapo2026

We've got a new #kakapo webcam! It's on Rakiura's nest on Whenua Hou. She laid an egg yesterday (we caught that on camera), but isn't incubating it yet. Follow to (hopefully) watch her lay more! #conservation #birds

All I need is a fountain pen ink that captures the tones and shading of this New Zealand tree bark. Is that really so much to ask?

Flying over Rakiura/Stewart Island en route to Whenua Hou today. There are *lots* of rimu trees - the favourite breeding food of #kakapo. We hoping to be able to return them there in the not-too-distant future, when the island is free of cats, rats and possums. #conservation

Last week no living person had seen a #kakapo lay an egg. Now you can watch it on our webcam: Rakiura laid her second today (15:01 on 25/1/2025). She'll probably lay another in 3 days' time. #conservation #kakapo2026 #birds www.doc.govt.nz/our-work/kak...

Here's one of the rarer passerines on the planet, the South Island saddleback, photographed feeding on the island of Ulva in Rakiura National Park. This is a juvenile or "jackbird".

Sad to report that we've lost another #kakapo, and a particularly significant one. Solstice was the last kākāpō rediscovered, found on Rakiura in 1997. She died on the weekend as a result of complications from the #disease cloacitis. There are now 237 kākāpō left. #conservation #parrots #birds

Three weeks ago I spent a few days in one of our global dark sky sanctuaries in Rakiura Stewart Island New Zealand. Never has deep time felt so real or so close.

But every now and then one of Elon's dumbfuck satellites would interrupt the eternal rhythms of the stars. Let's not let it get worse.
The FCC just opened public comments on SpaceX's plan to launch a million satellites to do AI compute in space. Under the current proposal, an environmental review won't be required. Please consider submitting a public comment to oppose this damaging plan.
