The two you're thinking of are probably Rambam and Ramban, right? Probably because the names are so close that the patronymic solves a problem. (In Hebrew, it's solved by saying RAMbam and RamBAN)

Last May, I gave talks in Barcelona/Girona in Catalonia, so I reread the 1263 “disputation” between nachmanides & the man he calls fray pul, representing the church. That is how I learned how old is today’s “debate me” tactic. In 1263 the King enforced it & IMO enforceability is still the real draw.

One time someone referred to Jews davvening as a “Talmudic ritual” and I said that it’s because they hold like Ramban against the Rambam that daily prayer is only Derabanan ;)

when the ramban said that you have the permission of the torah to be disgusting, this is what he meant. the torah sets a low bar for one’s obligations. you can be religious and a giant shitbag. it’s our duty to strive to do better than the basic guidelines ordain.

Ramban (Nachmanides/R. Moshe b. Nahman) writes with obvious delight of when he met Samaritans who could read ancient Hebrew script and resolve his uncertainties about it

correction: they are correct that the ramban views the inhabitants of shechem to be chayav misa, but ignore that the ramban (if one looks at his commentary on vayechi) clearly does not believe this to be suficient justification
