Today's Good Things:

Lots of sun again.

I started a book review for the December newsletter to get it down before forgetting the details.

Registered both of us for RavenCon 2027.

So... We found out over the summer that our hotel has been sold. They kept us waiting for 6 months to tell us what was going to happen. The news finally dropped about a month ago: Virginia Crossings, our home since 2021, is being torn down and turned into a senior living facility. We've been scrambling since September to find a new home for RavenCon. And we found one... In 2027, RavenCon is returning to the site of it's greatest achievements... The hotel we were at when we first broke 1000 members.... The hotel we were at when we hit our peak of 1500 members... The hotel we celebrated our 10th year at... The hotel we will now be at for our 20th year.... In exactly one year, we are returning to the Doubletree by Hilton Richmond Midlothian!!! I hope you're all as excited as we are. RavenCon has always tried to be, and will always strive to be, a welcoming and safe space for everyone. No one should ever feel afraid or unwelcome over embracing who they are.

So, we've been really quiet for a while now. There was a reason for that. Announcements will soon be forthcoming.

They’re so good! When @tkingfisher.com came to RavenCon a couple of years ago, there was somebody cosplaying as one of the monks of the White Rat! It was so cool!

Quote-repost your art with horns 🤘🏼
A block print of an exploding Cybertruck. In front of it is a small imp, silhouetted by the flames. On its head, a pair of horns have just appeared. The caption reads “Every time a Cybertruck blows up a demon gets its horns.” This is print 1 of 6, part of a limited edition for the panelists from a session I attended at RavenCon in 2024. It was inspired by a comment Ursula Vernon made about trying to be a good person, but still laughing when a Cybertruck blows up. Later, someone asked “we know that when a bell rings, an angel gets its wings. When does a demon get its horns?” “That’s what happens when a Cybertruck explodes,” I said, and my Muse grabbed me by my ear and said “you come with me, young man!” So Ursula ended up with print number one.

#MakersmARTch prompt: #print
Details in the alt text as usual.
This was my first linoblock print- an image of the old farmhouse at the Yorktown Victory Center. At the time I was the Farm supervisor there, and I cut this block to print holiday cards for my staff. We had just finished the transition to our new site and torn down the old one, and I wanted to commemorate the fact that we were the ones- last of the Old Guard, first of the vanguard. I’d planned to do the new farmhouse the following year but life got in the way. Blick Linoblock, Speedball ink, Flexcut and Speedball cutters. When I became the supervisor of James Fort, I cut this block of John Smith and the holly stamps specifically so I could make my new staff “Merry Smithmas” cards. A dad joke 400 years in the making. Block was Blick Lino, Speedball ink. Holly stamps were Speedball Speedy Carve and a couple of cheap stamp pads I bummed off my kid. Ramelson and Flexcut tools. Woodblock I carved with the idea that I could do a handful of them and print them on a Tshirt to wear when I’m demonstrating carving at the state fair and other shows/festivals. I have several, just haven’t made the shirt yet. Basswood, Pfeil chip carving knife, Flexcut palm gouges. Speedball ink. At RavenCon last year I was in a panel with 5 authors. At one point Ursula Vernon (aka T. Kingfisher) said “I try to be a good person, but I still laugh when a Cybertruck blows up.” A while later someone posed the question “we all know that when a bell rings, an angel gets its wings, but when does a demon get its horns?” And I hollered “that’s what happens when the Cybertruck blows up!” Everybody laughed, and the Muse grabbed me by the ear and said “come with me, young man!” By the time we left for home I had the whole thing figured out. I was up until 3am drawing, cutting, printing and hand-lettering a first night run. The next day I tracked down every author who had been on the panel and presented them with their own prints. Speedball SpeedyCarve, Speedball ink, Flexcut and Ramelson tools.

I missed a couple days of #JanuArty- told you I suck at these things. To catch up:

Yesterday was #red and today is #flat. Fortunately, as a chip carver and block printer, flat I can do…
For the prompt “red,” a small Dala horse carved in basswood and painted with acrylic washes. Approximately two inches tall and an inch and a half long. In a panel at RavenCon 2024, Ursula Vernon made a reference to trying to be good but still laughing whenever a Cybertruck explodes. A while later someone said “we all know that when a bell rings, an angel gets his wings, but when does a demon get his horns?” I replied “that’s what happens when the Cybertruck blows up!” The audience laughed, and my Muse grabbed my ear (as She sometimes does) and said “come with me, young man!” We got home around 11:00 and by 3 A.M. I was pulling prints. Every panelist who’d been there got one as a token of appreciation. The image shows a cartoony Cybertruck exploding behind a little imp whose horns have just appeared. The caption reads “Every time a Cybertruck blows up, a demon gets its horns.”

Born of a panel with @tkingfisher.bsky.social at RavenCon yesterday. I was up until 2am cutting this block. 100% worth it.

You’ve probably read them, but for space opera, my go-tos are Miller and Lee’s Liaden universe (the first time we went to RavenCon just to see an author), CJ Cherryh’s Foreigner series, and Lois McMasters Bujold’s Vorkosigan saga.
