Dudes are fine. And I for one thank Matt Dinniman as my Time of Iron books are being sold as readalikes and I am getting very nice emails from dudes! ‘I don’t see why everyone hates your main girl I think she has great tits and a great sense of humour’ one said memorably. Thank you sir I agree.
That said the #1 book on the NYT print/ebook list (and the USA Today list) this is week is from a dude, and the great publishing phenomenon of the last year is Matt Dinniman, who occupies multiple slots on multiple NYT lists, and let's not forget Andy Weir setting up camp either. Dudes are fine.

I'm so tired of DUNE readalikes because they never quite get at the ideas that make DUNE actually great. It's not just vibes and Bene Gesserit, you gotta be obsessed with something like ecology and the boundless light of Islam and alas, too few are.

I'm glad I had @annarosereads.bsky.social with me this week because the numbers were scary, and because we are talking about what to read if you loved Severance!

Yes! And I think this is a publishing problem rather than an individual one. I deal with this a lot when doing RA. Readers tell me they don't like speculative fiction then the book they want readalikes for are...speculative masking as literary.
I also think Mamatas makes a good point that I’ve been thinking about a lot over the past few years: Near-future sci-fi, particularly dystopian near-future sci-fi, has become more acceptable and is seen as more “literary” in today’s world.

Looking for a long thriller/procedural book series in the same vein as Jack Reacher and Harry Bosch. I've tried all the obvious readalikes and bounced off them (like Karin Slaughter and Scott Blade). I'd prefer something by and about BIPOC and/or queer, but those are few and far between.
