Here’s something fun that has gone relatively unreported. It appears that Microsoft is going billions of dollars in vendor financing, and has been for years.
As of September 30, 2025 and June 30, 2025, other receivables related to activities to facilitate the purchase of server components were $14.4 billion and $8.2 billion, respectively, and are included in other current assets in our consolidated balance sheets. We record financing receivables when we offer certain customers the option to acquire our software products and services offerings through a financing program in a limited number of countries. As of September 30, 2025 and June 30, 2025, our financing receivables, net were $3.9 billion and $4.3 billion, respectively, for short-term and long-term financing receivables, which are included in other current assets and other long-term assets in our consolidated balance sheets.

Here's the thing: the problem here isn't that NVIDIA is doing circular accounting (necessarily), it's that receivables are growing and so is inventory, which makes people worried things are being shipped without payment. It could be fine!

I believed things were fine more before I read this memo.

I mean, it'd be even funnier if they didn't even realize they were doing circular accounting with all of these deals, so this was totally sincere on their part. It would really underline how much this is run by people who are way out of their depth given the scale of everything they're involved in.

While NVIDIA seems to be doing really well, there are also a few concerning signs - accounts receivable (stuff it has yet to be paid for yet) is growing, along with inventory, suggesting generous payment terms that could go sideways in an economic panic.

What’s Going On With NVIDIA’s Accounts Receivables and Inventory? In its most recent quarter, four companies accounted for the vast majority of NVIDIA’s accounts receivables — which refers to products shipped or services rendered, but that haven’t been paid for yet. Typically, the company purchasing these goods or services are generally obliged to pay for them within a couple of months. An easy way to think of Accounts Receivables is as contracts to give somebody money for something. These companies aren’t named, but here’s their respective shares of NVIDIA’s Accounts Receivable, arranged in order of size: 22%, 17%, 14%, and 12%. NVIDIA’s accounts receivable were about 58.6% of its quarterly revenue in the last period. Itself an insane figure, it does allow us to figure out what these companies account for in dollar terms, as well as a percentage of that quarter’s revenue. Company One owed roughly $7.35bn, or 12.8% of that quarter’s entire revenue. Customer Two owed roughly $5.68bn, or around 10% of that quarter’s revenue. Customers Three and Four accounted for $4.68bn and $4bn respectively, or 8.2% and 7% of all revenue. One thing to note is that this concentration of customers is, if anything, getting worse. At the start of the year, Nvidia’s two largest customers accounted for 17% and 16% of Accounts Receivable. In essence, its largest customer has grown by nearly 30%. Now, Accounts Receivable are not, on their own, a proof of anything bad. Based on long discussions with a source familiar with accountancy behind trillion-dollar-plus corporations, it’s fairly reasonable to have ballooning accounts receivables when you’re making so much money — but this number keeps increasing at a time that NVIDIA claims that demand is off the charts. A Little Guide To How Revenue and Accounts Receivables Works In fact, maybe it’s helpful to explain how revenue and accounts receivable works real quick: Let’s say you sell bricks at $1. You have two bricks worth $1 on your balance sheet under “inventory,” so $2 under “inventory.” You agree to sell somebody a brick for $1. The brick is still on your balance sheet under inventory, but you now have $1 of accounts receivable. For that to turn into “revenue,” you have to transfer ownership of the brick. This can mean a lot of things, but in this scenario, this person needs this brick to build the house, and their buddy is going to get them a dollar in the future. This person does not have the $1 today, but you trust them to give you $1 in the future, and your agreement states they will. You hand them the brick, transferring ownership, and the brick leaves your assets on your balance sheet. You count $1 in revenue. A month later, your buddy hands you $1. You take $1 off your accounts receivable and move it to cash on your balance sheet. As a note: there are scenarios where you do not take cash, such as if NVIDIA ever traded GPUs for an equity position in a company, but this scenario is accurate in most cases. You’ll notice that there’s a period of time here where somebody else has your brick and you have not been given any money, but you booked the revenue because you transferred the asset. Now, imagine doing that with, say, billions of dollars of GPUs. You may immediately recoil — that sounds bad! — but this is fairly standard accounting for large amounts of capital flowing between trusted companies, especially when doing business requires one party to raise debt to pay. In many cases, companies have generous payment terms, which is why you might see GPUs transferred without payment received. NVIDIA has plenty of cash, and is getting paid.
