Many people got interested in this puzzle at MASA yesterday. The most fascinating thing is how many people assumed it was a trick question and looked for a solution with sticks inside or outside or on top of each other *assuming that sort of thing was the intent*.
Mostly text with some illustrations. One Hundred Factorial Puzzles, art and games with the Maths Learning Centre www.adelaide.edu.au/mathslearning/play #100factorial Twelve matchsticks Twelve matchsticks can be laid on the table to produce a variety of shapes. For example: Here there is an illustration of three shapes made from matchsticks: a shape like a two by two square with two one-by-one squares attached to it, a three by three square, and a five by one rectangle. Some shapes have the same area and some have a different area. For example, the shapes above have areas 6, 9 and 5. Arrange 12 matchsticks to make a shape with area 4.

Two regular hexagons inside a rectangle. What fraction of the rectangle is shaded?

I found this #geometrypuzzle in my sketchbook - I drew it last June, but I’m pretty sure I never got round to posting it. Better late than never!
A rectangle with one diagonal drawn in. A regular hexagon sits on the left below the diagonal, with one side vertical against the side of the rectangle, one sloping side lying along the diagonal, and a vertex touching the base of the rectangle. A second regular hexagon sits above the diagonal on the right so that the design has rotational symmetry. Everything inside the rectangle but outside the hexagons is shaded blue.

Four equilateral triangles. What’s the area of the red one?

What does your method look like?
The base of the largest triangle is horizontal along the bottom of the picture. On its left edge, and sharing the left vertex, is a smaller purple triangle with area 20. On the right edge of the large triangle, and sharing its right vertex, is a yellow triangle with area 5. All three of the red triangle’s vertices lie on the edges of the large triangle, and the vertices on the left and right are shared with the purple and yellow triangles respectively. In the centre of the red triangle is a question mark.

We see a right triangle with legs, six units and eight units. We do not know the length of the hypotenuse. Nestled inside the right triangle is a semi circle. The semicircle is tangent to the two legs. The diameter is along the hypotenuse. The question is what is the radius of the semicircle?
