#Redshirts
I mean, all of Redshirts
I have noticed that in a few repeated pairings between author and narrator that the author will sometimes write things to make the narrator say funny stuff. Do you ever do that with Wil?

One time Redshirts was optioned at FX and then The Orville was announced, and that was it for Redshirts at FX; Later Redshirts was optioned by Fuzzy Door Productions, the company that made, you guessed it, The Orville.

In summation Hollywood is a land of contrasts
Now I'm imagining you walking out of a meeting with Apple TV+ going "I'm so mad they turned down my kaiju agency story!" and completely ignoring their big poster for the "Monarch" show they make now

Trump has his own Redshirts now.
BREAKING: 88 FBI agents who worked on Trump cases were just physically escorted out of the Washington Field office per a source.

Redshirts won the Hugo but Old Man's War is the one in 36 languages with six sequels, so that's the one they'll go with. Redshirts will show up in paragraph six of my obit, along with one or two others (probably "Starter Villain" and whatever is the latest novel).
I thought the canonical Scalzi book was Redshirts?

YES! Also, love Redshirts!
@scalzi.com @gailsimone.bsky.social I keep my promises. Also, could not be happier to put them on the same shelf. Let the feud continue *wink*

Redshirts.

Star Trek fact💫
The idea that redshirts always die is mostly a myth.
In the original series, more goldshirts actually died than redshirts.

Your brain just remembers the red ones.
Pop culture rewrote the statistics.

The codas were what got Redshirts the Hugo.
Like Galaxy Quest, it's a love letter to Trek.

Of course, I think the codas were the best part.

Old Man's War. It's sold basically the same number of books every year for two decades. Among more recent books, Starter Villain is the one that really popped; it's got a great cover and crossover appeal. Between those two Redshirts has had perennial success (the Hugo helps with its backlist sales).
Just curious, since you’re on the subject.

Which of your books is your biggest earner?

If you're at Denver airport today there's a signed copy of Redshirts at the C gates Tattered Cover bookstore

Redshirts too!

And Old Man's War, while we're at it.

And, uh, Lock In.

Damn, I have a trope
Really enjoying the @scalzi.com Audio novella (story?) CONSTITUENT SERVICE with the always amazing Amber Benson. Realized that with this, STARTER VILLAIN and KAIJU PRESERVATION SOCIETY he has created a subgenre of scifi, "first day at the weird job."

Redshirts, John Scalzi's left-handed love letter to Star Trek.

5. AND NOW CAVEATS: Fantasy didn't have the same problem with humor as SF (a big tip of the hat to Terry Pratchett here), and there were SF books between HHGTG and Redshirts that has humor in them or were even marketed as such, just without the commercial/critical success of Redshirts. THAT SAID...

Why isn’t Red Scholar’s Wake on this list? Why isn’t Night Watch or Redshirts or Escape From Baghdad! Where’s Amari Peters? Or the Culture?

If you're at SFO and you stop by Green Apple Books, you'll find signed copies of Redshirts, Kaiju and Moon. Go get them!

Happy birthday to Star Trek, as it happens I have a very obvious reason I'm glad that universe exists; without it, at the very least, one of my novels would have a very different title. Even without that connection, however, this universe has given me a lot of joy. Live long and prosper, Star Trek!

Yes! I wrote an article about how a quote from me shows up in the "No Man's Sky" video game, and how many times I had to kill myself to see it:

Disposing of redshirts killed in the line of duty was a regular occurrence on Star Trek…

I keep telling @jonathancoulton.bsky.social we should collaborate on a Redshirts musical, he's already written one of the songs
