30 frames per second? Get Reel! (in 1993)

Home computer CPUs weren't (and wouldn't be up for years yet) up to snuff to manage video decompression at high frame rates on their own. So instead, we see hardware solutions, such as SigmaDesign's ReelMagic dedicated MPEG card.
A snap of a scan of an article on the ReelMagic card and how it's aimed to have industry-wide adoption as a standard. It'll also include a soundcard with SB and OPL support.

I've been reminded by a moot's post about LOTR that I checked out the 'ReelMagic' version of Interplay's 1990 Lord of the Rings game.

Aside from CD music and speech, one of the other aditions you get are cutscenes with snippets taken from the 1978 Ralph Bakshi LOTR movie.

But yes, this is from the ReelMagic CD-ROM version of Loriciel's Entity, which is absolutely endearing in how much it tries to worldbuild.

It's mainly accuracy. Morden forks have perfect or near perfect emulation for OPL2/3, Roland MT-32 family, and Sound Canvas. Or 70 fps VGA output. Stuff like that. Plus lots more configuration options, and hardware emulation such as 3Dfx, ReelMagic, etc. Or even better mouse handling.

I like the presentation a lot, plus the ReelMagic version (which I missed out on) looks even better than Phantasmagoria two years later.
But not much else that I would save. Sure, it was an interesting experiment, but one that clearly showed that textual adventures needed something different.
