My @thestar.com column this week salutes some real heroes on the streets: crossing guards. Drivers in Ontario are emboldened & dangerous. The guards are precariously employed, disrespected, threatened & a pedestrian’s thin line of defence. It’s absurd we need them yet they’re essential.

It has taken me a long time to figure out why the #OCTranspo New Ways to Bus logo makes me uneasy. Today, I got it. The logo shows that the fastest way between A and B is to walk. The bus / train lines shown are not used.

Yesterday afternoon I met 10-year-old Japnam in front of Shingwàkons Public School in #Stittsville.
After reading the sad news of a child getting struck by a vehicle in her neighbourhood earlier this summer, Japnam started a petition asking for more speed cameras in front local schools.

In #Ottawa we need straighter tracks for our trains and bendier roads for cars.
Curved tracks slow LRT to a crawl. Riverside Drive Speedway (and many other straightaways) encourage stunt driving speeds. #DesignMatters

Want to actually make a safer city? Start with design: design better public spaces, so cyclists, pedestrians, and yes, drivers, are safer. At its heart, #DesignMatters; you can put all the signs up that you want, unless we design safer environments it’s all irrelevant.

To look at the underlying issues and find the solution: more often than not, it can be found in design: design better. End right on red; better road design, lower speed limits. Design so we don’t NEED crossing guards; make car-free zones around schools. #DesignMatters

It’s the little things: instead of a sloped sidewalk to make it easier for cars, the sidewalk stays level: the slope is added OUTSIDE the curb creating access, and forms a sort of bulb out for parking, patios, seating. @brigittepellerin.bsky.social #RandomActsOfUrbanism #Accessibility#DesignMatters

This is why #DesignMatters; we spent millions of dollars to rebuild Scott Street and put in bike lanes, which is good. But we also put a bus route on and made the corner so tight a bus can’t make the corner without cars having to back up and get out of the way.
