Despite contributing to billion-dollar AI systems, Junbee makes less than minimum wage through Remotasks, a subsidiary of Scale AI. However, there’s little recourse for workers at foreign companies like Remotasks, and that’s by design.

That’s why we developed the Data Work Landscape, which maps 116 companies; 1,900+ investor, client, and partner relationships; and the hidden AI supply chain. techequity.us/2026/05/21/d...

AI isn’t all that artificial. Junbee in the Philippines, for instance, spends all day annotating data to “teach” AI what, for instance, avocado toast looks like.

Despite contributing to billion-dollar AI systems, Junbee makes less than minimum wage through Remotasks, a subsidiary of Scale AI.

Curious which jobs. Scale AI advertises $25/hour for PhD-level training work. Two lawsuits and a DOL investigation later, the effective rate is closer to $15 once unpaid task prep is factored in. Remotasks workers make $1-5/hour. These are the new jobs.

Doctors, engineers, and academics who once earned six‑figure salaries are now taking $20/hour micro‑tasks for companies like Outlier, Appen, and Remotasks. Their decades of expertise are being converted into training sets; fuel for models that may erase the need for their roles in the future.

Remotasks employs you to train AI. But the pay is peanuts and in the end you’re expendable.

The precarity is not new. Data workers talked about how Remotasks pulled out of Africa with no warning years ago.

There's also another bad side of AI not mentioned in the article: the hundreds of thousands of people that worked in slave-like conditions doing data labelling for AI companies, the majority from Venezuela, Kenya and Nepal working for Appen, Remotasks, Scale and CloudFactory.

The driverless car industry harms workers. When labor is outsourced and hidden away, employees are often poorly paid, non-union, and subject to abuse.

Think workers should be treated with dignity and respect? Ride a bus.

Companies like OpenAI used Kenyan workers earning under $2/hour to label toxic content for ChatGPT. Meta, Google & others use intermediaries like Scale AI & Remotasks to hide their exploitation through supply chains.

"Scale AI’s own labor practices are horrid enough. But AFP reports that one Scale AI subsidiary, Remotasks, is taking it a step further: paying data labelers roughly one US cent for every task they finish, which can take hours. It’s a system Kanyugi compared to “modern slavery.”"

Scale AI and contractor Remotasks hire low-wage data labelers in Kenya, Colombia and India to annotate traumatic images, reportedly paying roughly one cent per task and exposing major AI firms to reputational, legal and regulatory risks.
