Reintroduce companies like Remploy? Why now set minimum limits for large corporations to employ disabled people? Why not ensure public sector work for disabled ppl?

IMHO, the actually positive model for getting more disabled people off work is to hold jobs for them, it’s to remove barriers to …

David Cameron, who loved to demonise the sick and disabled, trashed Remploy.

Remploy, who used to be a sheltered employment company, and one of their products was industrial modular shelving. Wooden uprights and shelves with an astounding load capacity.
We have one wall covered floor to ceiling, but it's no longer available😢.
Unless it's come back since we last looked.

UK here, we had David Cameron as pm 10+ yrs ago.
He cut 30+Remploy factories that employed nationally over 1500 disabled people.
They would have moved onto benefits... which his party then cut.

Don't forget the legacy of politicians who treat the disabled & poor like this.

Just that we 'might' look like we work there. Due to people thinking we don't look able to do proper jobs. #Remploy

I really hope so, working helped mentally, if not physically, but still worth it.
But I'm lucky to have found a great employer who offers flexibility.
The old Remploy system is sorely missed.
But I will hold judgement until it's in place and not penalising people. 👍

There's an angle about disability quotas there. My parents regularly bought Remploy furniture, partly because of War disabled workers there, the patriotic thing to do.

I had an auntie & uncle (both in wheelchairs) who worked for Remploy back in the mists of time when it was a bigger org: they found it hugely empowering. In some ways it was a victim of its own success as it demonstrated that the disabled could manage just fine in workplaces with accommodations.

Is this the same Remploy that employs disabled people and current/ex-offenders? Or just a coincidence?

I've only ever stumbled across Remploy a few times - never dug deeper, and having just gone through a few books can't find any references to them...

Just looked them and their 'mission' up, and I'm staggered I've never really heard of them. Some stunning stuff, and an inspiring company...

In fact a lot of it probably was Remploy, perhaps I'd picked up the G Plan idea from my parents. Can't be sure.
