Granted ... he is uniquely equipped to speak to *looks around*

all of this ...

and perhaps the calculus of representationalism kinda moves because "president" is not just a job... it's THE job in American political life

very compelling argument for representationalism about psychology and antirepresentationalism about neuroscience

And you just don't get a good painting of a monarch without representationalism. It isn't Done

In his Dennett Prize lecture, Nick Humphrey says he's an illusionist but methinks his phenomenal realism says otherwise.

Trans scientists are fallible and science is more than representationalism, facts matter and Jaime Raines did transmisogynist research to prove a point about his dick.

But the wider principle that a community should be funded as legitimate actors in scientific research about itself remains.
Not all trans scientists though! 🫠

Coming up tomorrow on #HoPWaG: the debate between Malebranche and Arnauld on the "vision in God": how we form our ideas. This turns out to be an early version of the contemporary debate over representationalism.

when you ask someone to draw a dollar bill from memory you get something that isn’t even a *degraded* version of the visual image but does preserve certain abstract properties with perfect fidelity. this is somehow evidence *against* representationalism

Representationalism and the impossibility of autistic transgender identification
The ‘trans debates' have proliferated widely, and autism is frequently brought into these discussions. Autism researchers have begun to explore the perceived over-representation of autistic people ...

These smaller canvases are a lot of fun and very relaxing to paint; the limitation of size removes the obligation of representationalism.

In his PhD, Gaurav defended a novel form of representationalism, which combined Aristotle with the Indian classical philosophy of Nyāya. etheses.durham.ac.uk/id/eprint/16...

We often talk about style in terms of abstraction vs representationalism/realism, in western media (and certainly in western design classes), but because manga as a medium has already abandoned colour and realism, the style design becomes much more about clarity of genre

Whitehead dismantles the inside/outside line. Rorty walks out of the room. Two rejections of representationalism, same relational core — different axes.

Two-Pronged Anti-Representationalism
Whitehead and Rorty reject representationalism from the same relational core but along different axes — one ontological, one epistemological. What would it take to unite them?

The real question: What comes after post-anti-representationalism?
January 28, 2026 at 11:46 AM
I wouldn’t say “alone,” and I’d probably broaden to “representationalism,” but I’m willing to assert it as a necessary condition

"Cartoon" is right; this guy believes the cartoon version of Cartesian representationalism and needed 1. an introduction to philosophy and/or 2. a swift kick in the ass.

On the one hand, this toothache is awful and it is keeping me up all night. On the other hand, it is quite interesting (and slightly pain distracting) to introspect it whilst thinking about transparency and representationalism, and illusionism etc. Who says philosophy is useless?

...as part of the composition, rather than as something imposed on/over the composition, something added later. I'm inclined to think of them in the latter sense. The inscription on a painting interrupts its illusionism (or its representationalism, anyway, since illusionism is rarely the point);

I provide the pragmatist perspective. I start from Rouse's distinction between the "practice"-reading of Kuhn and the "theory"-reading. We then discuss spectator theory of knowledge, anti-representationalism (Dewey), Cartesian Anxiety (Bernstein), tacit knowledge (Polanyi) and knowing-how (Ryle)

Yes I think the representationalism in phil.neuro is sort of distinct from what practical neuroscientists were doing. One was making certain theoretical commitments but the other was simply methodological representationalism. But somehow all these things were so mixed up, esp. in 2011-2015
