Maybe not logical behaviorists but a lot of anti-representationalists with behaviorist inclinations.

The idea is that representation is part of the mechanism, and so sub-personal, rather than the object of perception. So most modern representationalists typically say that we perceive *by* representing things to be thus-and-so, rather than we perceive our representations (à la Hume).

I feel that your interpretation is closer to the “shapes and forms” than the vast majority of individuals purporting to be “representationalists”. I’m happy to have come across your works, thank you.

It’s a useless posit of a fake difference, a pseudo-distinction required when the representationalists’ simplistic theory crashes against our unsimple world. [3/3]

Sure, right, but this argument isn’t really pitched at the Dennettian: it’s for those who are genuine representationalists who also think that LLMs are originally intentional systems (in Searle’s sense.) There are a number of those people in the current literature, hence the target.

Today's gym and chores soundtrack. Miguel Segundo-Ortin cashes out how Di Paolo's, adaptive, autopoietic, account of agency needs ecological psych's account of information.

A really nice summary of Di Paolo's account among other things.

I agree but most atheists are representationalists which logically ends up at the same position as dualism if you take it seriously. Materialism is only coherent as a monoist philosophy if you move beyond representationalism. Feuerbach was the first to point this out.

"In the present dialectical context, the key question is whether anti-representationalists can preserve the explanatory benefits of Bayesian models without invoking representational mental states. I doubt it.

Even string representationalists will often claim that we need some way of explaining why some representational states (experiences) have phenomenal character and others do not (beliefs). I don’t really see the motivation for this anymore. There’s no deep mystery to solve regarding why experiences

...and exactly the kind of trickery which becomes very difficult if one enforces linguistic and conceptual hygiene, as he calls it. Which is why he insists upon that hygiene and proper definitions, and also (one suspects) why representationalists often do not like that insistence.

(also yes I know there are other representationalists/realists working out there, but McNaughton is prolific and successful not the least because he hitched his business to Trump and opened a market of people who otherwise aren't really interested in buying new art)

To anti-representationalists - or representationalist-questioners - are we closing in on what a representation IS?
