I was glad this point was covered by retractionwatch.

Whether the work was affiliated with the university cannot depend on it being retracted. Affiliation determines what research integrity committee has oversight; this should be no-takesy-backsies when things go south.

A good summary. For me the real tragedy is how this all kicked off. I'd say that was the article by Retractionwatch reporting that Arday (and Cam?) successfully prevented a publication in THE about his misconduct. That then enabled a white supremacist to fill that void and then the pile-on started.

Having said this this discussion is now so super polarised that one is either for or against. However, that was already mentioned in the initial RetractionWatch article which kicked it all off. MDPI is also a very dodgy publisher and a red flag itself.

No.

About a week after this RetractionWatch investigation was published, Cambridge opened an investigation into Arday for academic misconduct. Arday resigned the same day. Maybe the investigation would have debunked it, but he resigned before it could.

We think automated tools (which in metacheck are seldom genAI based), can help by collecting information that is either tedious to check (e.g., cross-referencing retractionwatch and pubpeer), or one might not know to check (e.g., completeness of power analysis reporting).
June 11, 2026 at 7:15 AM
Some of those modules cross-reference the DOIs from the reference section against external databases, like PubPeer, RetractionWatch, or FLoRA. RW and FLoRA databases are downloaded then checked, so no info goes to them. PP checking requires an internet connection to check for matching entries.
