Copper-clad buildings peaked around 1935–45. Pre-WWII structures prioritized fire safety, featuring smaller windows like this one. Its neglected state brings a sense of sorrow, as if the building is quietly waiting for its eventual demolition.

A building near Chichibu Shrine with a rusty ~1970s sign. Why a Honda car sign on a bike shop? The adjacent sign says it all: "Bicycle & Light Motor Vehicle Association." Back then, local bike shops sold bicycles, scooters, and light cars!

Copper sheeting was common in the 1920s–30s, mostly on flat facades. But this one seems to be an older traditional wooden structure with copper added later for fireproofing. A fascinating piece of aged architectural history.

Old shop on Gyoda's former main street. The faded sign reads "Furai-yaki." Not fried, but a flour-and-water pancake, an early Showa hit still loved today. Pure nostalgia.

Built in 1934, Katsunuma Okaido served as a local community hall. Although "Kokaido" means public hall, it functioned primarily as a neighborhood hub. Though simple in design, it remains remarkably well-preserved as a valuable piece of local history.

This corrugated iron-clad wooden building feels like a postwar structure. A notice at the entrance states the business closed after 34 years. Blending into the townscape, this "signboard architecture" perfectly embodies the Shōwa era atmosphere.

This two-story wooden structure is a masterpiece of Japanese "Kanban" (signboard) architecture. Its most striking feature is the beautifully rounded corners of the walls, further accentuated by intricate cornice moldings and ornate window surrounds.

Founded in Hongo in 1916, this boarding house moved to Ogikubo, Tokyo in 1931 after the Great Kanto Earthquake. Its L-shaped Western-style annex was built in 1938—a rarity at the time. Post-WWII, the main wing became a ryokan, while the annex is now apartments.

Near Nippori Station stands a striking Showa-era bakery built in 1932. The "encircled cross" emblem on its wall is the founder’s traditional family crest, passed down to this branch shop. I love this unique blend of Western architecture and Japanese crest.
