Printed a Revueltosaurus skull for some outreach this week. Once thought to be an early dinosaur, this friend is actually more closely related to crocs. Specimens from Petrified Forest NP were the first to determine this important discovery. #fossilfriday #triassicpark 🦖🧪

One of our best fossils collected from Petrified Forest. It is a ‘Rosetta stone’ specimen of Revueltosaurus callenderi providing key information on the osteoderm arrangement and clarifying relationships within Aetosauriformes.

From Late Triassic North America, "Revuelto lizard" is a genus of meter-long pseudosuchian whose species were once thought to be ornithischian dinosaurs. One species, R. callenderi, seems to feature a "tube" of club-like tail armor

today we drew Diictodon, Megarachne, Revueltosaurus, and Charnia

a male Diictodon's burrow is being flooded and rapidly fills with fine sediment from a nearby lake, the male is overwhelmed and most likely will die here Diictodon is a type of small synapsid, the ancestors of mammals that split from reptiles, they had a small beak at the front of their faces and long tusks to the sides a Megarachne kicks up the sediment to feed in a forest vernal pool, a large horsetail can be seen in the top left, macroalgae coats the bottom in patches Megarachne is a freshwater sea scorpion that used its three front limbs to kick up sediment so it could sift through for organic matter to eat. it kinda looks like an elongated spider with less eyes, and prongs on its three front pairs of limbs a Revueltosaurus cools down in a large pool of mud. it's seen from a top down view, with ripples around it giving away its movement Revueltosaurus is a type of pseudosuchian, a cousin of crocodilians, that had osteoderms not only on its back, but also on its belly. it also possessed osteoderms on the tip of the tail that looked like a tail club, but probably was not able to be used like one near the bottom of the sea a pair of Charnia are illuminated by an artificial light. they collect organic matter from the surrounding organic snow, an especially large piece slowly drifts towards them Charnia is a type of basal animal that grew attached into the sediment, however we don't know exactly how or what it was eating. it has a similar appearence to a single elongate but still ovoid leaf
