We had to cut this rhoddie way back years ago and it languished until this year when it put on some really lovely flowers - patience rewarded.

Rhoddie clearance a while back (for those who might think chainsawing is not for barristers….)

This by the way is what rhoddie clearance looks like. Photo 1 - that is a wall of Ponticum. Photo 2 is fire clearance

Aha, hadn’t spotted the rhoddie when replying… ours was hedgelaying brash: hazel, oak, ash, hawthorn…

Due to the appalling summer things have got a little out of hand. Not quite the days of rhoddie clearance and we have switched to lithium kit but the chainsaw protective gear is back on 2/2

Clearance was necessary and some sections were 150 years old. First you chainsaw a path. As you go you burn the chainsawn bits behind you (bearing in mind the smoke is toxic). This is necessary to destroy the toxics the rhoddie has left in the earth. Rinse and repeat 3/n

Rhoddies (at least ponticum) don’t do that - they are toxic. So you have to burn them - and the smoke is toxic. This also burns off the toxic leaves etc on the ground. Herodotus talks about a battle being lost due to toxic rhoddie honey….

I've always found the Farmer's Almanac to be accurate - for someone. I should go take a look at the rhoddie buds.
I'm envious of the PNW climate. Once spent time in Vancouver in late March admiring the gardens and cherry blossoms then came back home where things 4-6 weeks behind.

Forget rage rooms, have you tried rhoddie bashing? Equally cathartic & good for the planet! 🌍😅

I respectfully disagree about the blanket label. I might say something objectionable in a post (which I haven’t) and deserve those views getting labelled (which hasn’t happened) That does not mean my views on rhoddie clearance or greenhouse building (which are many) should be labelled as intolerant.
