#Rhytons
Based on Ancient Greek rhytons, this hood is both elegant and playful. Each element was carefully painted on, and gleams in gold, contrasting with a metallic black base. spectralhoods.etsy.com/listing/4557...

Lares - protective spirits - pour wine from rhytons, with a veiled Genius (protector of the home and business) in the middle, sacrificing to the gods and holding a cornucopia, symbol of abundance. Mercury and Dionysus appear on either side, blessing the business. 🏺 2/

Most Pompeiians lived in multi-story dwellings without kitchens and got their food at thermopolia, essentially taverns with ready-made food and wine. There is a fine fresco and colored plaster lararium - shrine - above the counter at the thermopolium of Lucius Vetutius Placidus.🏺 1/

Then there's the training dummies in Rhalgr's Reach that look like a lion which remind me of the design and style of lion statues seen around Persepolis as well as in Achaemenid era rhytons. Much like griffins, lions signify kingship and nobility.

There are several rhytons shaped like dog heads. The one in the photo may depict a Greek or Etruscan hound, rather than a Cretan or Laconian/Spartan one. Those are hounds with pointed ears: the former survives today (left photo), the latter was the ancient Greek hound described by Xenophon.

There would be only one spout on a rhyton, and it would usually be in the mouth of ones shaped like animal heads. On rhyta with animal body protomes, below, the spout would usually be in the chest, but that depended on the shape of the sculpture. See the spouts 👇 🏺

Cloisonne bull rhytons. Three at various sale prices (one sold $48 incl shipping, two others on offer), compared to circa 1970s catalog listing. Recent repros or old warehouse stock?
Quality doesn't appear to be as good as the warehouse pic, but 1990s economics got rocky for the state workshops.

LRP I love rhytons so much😤 Especially when they're in the shape of an animal's head. So cool!

That cup would be held upside down, with the wine or libation exiting through the nose? Mouth?

Wikipedia also has a good article on this ancient cup form.

A #Greek rhyton in the shape of a #dog's head. 🐕🐶

Vessels such as this were used in drinking parties. Since they didn't have a base, their contents had to be consumed before the vessel could be put down

Dating ca. 475 BC.

Well rhytons come from a historically seafaring culture from close to the dark side of the planet and would raid Coastal and River settlements tho many now are in fishing and tread now. Hobblins are silly little scavengers that love to explore the world! They also make excellent chimney sweeps

Actually, rhytons were vessels primarily made for pouring and presenting liquid offerings.

It's said to come from Vulci, presumably from an Etruscan tomb. Rhytons like this were often placed as grave goods, that's why quite a few have survived intact.

@drnwillburger.bsky.social I hadn’t figured out why rhytons were designed that way-makes sense! Here are some from the museum in Heraklion, Crete. Also adorable! Surprising that so many survived.

Bring out the fancy lounges and the best crockery, it’s time to feast!

May your festivities look something like this with drinking horns (rhytons), fabulous hair nets, and delightful tripod tables.

#FrescoFriday from the MANN! We have the Lares and Snakes panel from Pompeii (Regio VII.2/3)

We have two Lares in their typical pose with rhytons, the Genius performing a sacrifice with attendants and an aulos-player. Below a pair of snakes lie near an altar that has eggs on.

I took some overviews in the Jatta Museum (Ruvo di Puglia) of cabinets crammed with pottery (many rhytons). I reviewed them hoping to find one like yours, but all I see is one two-handled piece with a satyr's face. No close up, unfortunately, but now I have something new to look out for! Thanks!
