#Rhytons
Fresco of a figure carrying a cornucopia from Herculaneum. Throughout Pompeii and Herculaneum, the guardian deities (Lares) are often depicted holding rhytons or drinking horns, but the cornucopia signifies abundance and precedes our modern day ‘horn of plenty.’

It's said to come from Vulci, presumably from an Etruscan tomb. Rhytons like this were often placed as grave goods, that's why quite a few have survived intact.

Most Pompeiians lived in multi-story dwellings without kitchens and got their food at thermopolia, essentially taverns with ready-made food and wine. There is a fine fresco and colored plaster lararium - shrine - above the counter at the thermopolium of Lucius Vetutius Placidus.🏺 1/

Lares - protective spirits - pour wine from rhytons, with a veiled Genius (protector of the home and business) in the middle, sacrificing to the gods and holding a cornucopia, symbol of abundance. Mercury and Dionysus appear on either side, blessing the business. 🏺 2/

#FrescoFriday from the MANN! We have the Lares and Snakes panel from Pompeii (Regio VII.2/3)

We have two Lares in their typical pose with rhytons, the Genius performing a sacrifice with attendants and an aulos-player. Below a pair of snakes lie near an altar that has eggs on.

Then there's the training dummies in Rhalgr's Reach that look like a lion which remind me of the design and style of lion statues seen around Persepolis as well as in Achaemenid era rhytons. Much like griffins, lions signify kingship and nobility.

Ceramic history. Greece. Dog-head rhyton (drinking cup or saddle cup). Museum in Padova, Italy. Cup could not be put down when filled. Superimposed a dog head on the drinker while in use. More general info about rhytons here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhyton

I’m currently working on a new series of rhytons (without much to show yet beyond blobs of clay hehe) and thinking about what other animals to add to the line up. So far I’ve done a series of stags, hares and rams. I have some ideas already but I’d love to hear yours!

I’ve been really inspired by all the animal head rhytons and bronze figures I saw in Greece

Kültepe rhytons appear in every shape imaginable (Assyrian Trade Colonies Period, 1900-1700 BC).🏺
(The hidden watermarks are mine. I am not stealing others' pics, folks.😅)

How it was/how it is. Terracotta Hittite rhytons shaped like the holy bulls of God Teshub named Hurri & Serri, from Boğazköy, 16th century BC. I couldn't find the source for the first pic, the second pic was taken in Museum of Anatolian Civilizations by me.🏺

Actually, rhytons were vessels primarily made for pouring and presenting liquid offerings.

There are several rhytons shaped like dog heads. The one in the photo may depict a Greek or Etruscan hound, rather than a Cretan or Laconian/Spartan one. Those are hounds with pointed ears: the former survives today (left photo), the latter was the ancient Greek hound described by Xenophon.

#Ancient #Greek rhytons. The first is #Minoan around 4,000 years ago. The others are 4th century B.C.E. They are vessels for offerings to the gods or to drink from. Imagine how much you’d drink at a wine party if it’s impossible to put your drink down.

Cloisonne bull rhytons. Three at various sale prices (one sold $48 incl shipping, two others on offer), compared to circa 1970s catalog listing. Recent repros or old warehouse stock?
Quality doesn't appear to be as good as the warehouse pic, but 1990s economics got rocky for the state workshops.

C'est la copie des vieux Rhytons romains ou même grecs.
April 13, 2025 at 7:34 AM
It also says it is a rhyton, but rhytons strictly have a drinking or pouring spout at the bottom of the vessel, and this one does not, so technically, I believe it is simply a very cool drinking cup.

"-This eagle looks... Exhausted somehow.
-OK then, let's make another... A happy one."
Is this how it happened, I wonder.😁Bronze Age rhytons from Kültepe.

I had shared this post long ago on Twitter, and right now, while copying it, I discovered something, some familiar detail.😍
Did anyone notice?😃

Intentionally made without a flat base, these ornate animal-head rhytons could not be set down on a table until completely drained of their contents. After downing the last of his wine, an ancient drinker could place the cup upside-down and be greeted by the face of the faithful hound.
