Our man in the window is in no mood for this. He lets us know, “Oh, I am in no mood for this.” His dog looks out the window as well, wagging its tail. Fantasia (1940) inspired drawing. I think I could’ve gone a little heavier with the chaos outside but we’ll try again with fresh drawings this October. I like how the clouds turned out. Trying to balance my sloppy lines with more detail can be tricky but I think we achieved a good result.

My photo shows a tiny mammoth figurine carved from mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago, dated to the Aurignacian culture. It is one of the oldest known works of portable art. It is viewed in profile with head to left, mounted on a thin dark metal display stand against a dark background. Although the figurine only measures 3.7 cm in length the artist suceeded in capturing naturalistic details combined with an aesthetic eye to create a tiny object which encapsulates the characteristic form, power, and beauty of the animal. The ivory is weathered, now a mottled yellowish-greyish-brown colour. The mammoth’s head is rounded with a long, slightly inward curved trunk. At the back of the head, the upper back rises into a distinctive rounded shoulder hump giving it a characteristic woolly mammoth form. The line of the lower back and rump slope downwards to a short pointed tail. The body is large with thick rounded forelegs, and slightly shorter, thick hind legs, giving it a massive and powerful appearance. It was found in 2006 in the spoil heap from the earlier 1931 excavations at the Vogelherd Cave in the Lone Valley in Germany’s Swabian Jura. The Ice Age caves of the Swabian Jura are a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The teasel (Dipsacus fullonum) is also called Barber’s Brush, Fairy’s Broom and Prickly Beehive. Romans called it “lavacrum Veneris”, or “basin of Venus”, as droplets of water that gather at the leaf joints were said to have medicinal and beautifying qualities. #FolkloreThursday
