The Guardian's review of the new ITV series 'Winter', starring Richard Armitage as Dr. Ethan Winter, a forensic pathologist with a maverick approach to crime-solving. The show, based on the French thriller 'Balthazar', follows Winter as he investigates crimes while grappling with the unresolved murder of his fiancée a decade ago. The review acknowledges the show's 'ferociously watchable' nature despite its 'daft' elements, praising its high production values, direction, soundtrack, and lighting that create a distinctive atmosphere in Bristol. The reviewer notes that while the plot may be 'a thing of string and glue', the character's backstory involving his fiancée's murder provides a compelling narrative thread. Armitage's performance is highlighted as a key strength, with the reviewer describing his presence as 'a seal of quality' that ensures 'gratuitous demonstrations of upper-body strength' and a 'voice like a Twix melting in a bra fire'. The show is described as a 'potboiler in a belted trenchcoat' that balances ridiculous moments with engaging storytelling, making it 'as ferociously watchable as it is unnecessarily expensive'. The review concludes that while the show may not be highbrow drama, it delivers exactly what viewers want when they're in the mood for a 'maverick' crime procedural with Armitage's signature intensity. The series is now available on ITV1 and ITVX.
