George Rochberg (1918-2005) wrote his Transcendental Variations as a departure from the sterile 12-tone method of his early career. In #6, he seems to channel Mahler. I put on my headphones and listen to this daily, and for a brief two minutes, it takes me to a place far from the chaos and horror.♥️

Reading "Toys as Culture" by Brian Sutton-Smith (1986) tonight, and he talks directly to me on identity theory. I think most of us have childhood toys (or the memories of them) that are a huge part of who we still are. #gamestudies
An image of text, which reads: Psychologists Csikszentmihalyi and Rochberg-Halton have asked, “Does it matter whether a King has a crown or a throne, a judge a bench, a criminal a gun, a cop a uniform? Don’t we need to identify people and they identify themselves by their familiarity and facility with appropriate objects? Don’t objects bring order into the words worlds of those who use them and the rest who can recognize them?“ In these terms, aren’t children nowadays those creatures who are known by their toys, plays and games, who are classified, according to age and sex, by their toys? Don’t their toys order our perception of them and bring order into their ideas of who they are themselves? There is no facile answer to these questions, but the psychologist believe that the things around us are inseparable from who we are. Like our clothes, they define and adorn us and create expectations among others and ourselves about how we will behave. They are not just objects to be picked up and thrown away. They give shape to our experience, and our consciousness. We are nothing without them. Material goods are the measure of the adult; and the toys, of the child.
