“Grumpy Common Rosefinch from Canada”

🌏 Pallas's Rosefinch (Carpodacus roseus) The Pallas's Rosefinch is a medium-sized, stocky finch where the adult male is conspicuous with a rose-red body, head, and rump, contrasted by a streaked blackish back, while the female is much duller, being mostly tannish-brown with heavy dark streaking. This species is distributed across the Eastern Palearctic, primarily inhabiting boreal forests and shrublands in Central and Eastern Russia, Mongolia, and China, with most populations being migratory or nomadic, wintering in regions like Japan and the Korean Peninsula. Outside of the breeding season, it is generally gregarious, forming flocks to forage mainly on the ground or in low vegetation for seeds, buds, and insects. Two subspecies are recognised. 2.5 Flash (Edited) Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1) Fun fact: This finch is a fan of the cold! The rosefinches are a genus, Carpodacus, of passerine birds in the finch family Fringillidae. Most are called "rosefinches" and as the word implies, have various shades of red in their plumage. The common rosefinch is frequently called the "rosefinch". The genus name is from the Ancient Greek terms karpos, "fruit", and dakno, "to bite".

🌎 House finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) The house finch is a small, adaptable bird of the true finch family Fringillidae. Males are distinctive with rosy-red on their face, throat, and upper breast, contrasting with streaky brown body plumage. Females are plain greyish-brown with blurry streaks. Yellow and orange forms of the male house finch are not rare, but they are also not as common as the typical red colouration. Originally from the western United States and Mexico, they were introduced to the east and are now widespread across North America, thriving in urban, suburban, and semi-open habitats. House finches are highly social, often forming large flocks, especially outside breeding season. They are common at bird feeders, feeding primarily on seeds, buds, and fruits. Males sing a cheerful, warbling song, particularly during courtship, which includes a "butterfly flight" display. Stonking 2nd day in Poland. Our highlight: White Backed Woodpecker, long awaited and our final Euro Woody. But also Pigmy Owls at their nest; Marsh,Great Reed, Savi's and Itcterine Warblers;Grey Headed and LS Woods; Rosefinches, Cresties, Firecrest. And a perched LS Eagle at close range. Phew.

I birded Cape Põõsaspea, Haversi, Leidisso, and Puise today. More Broad-billed Sandpipers (9), Temminck's Stint, Marsh Warblers, and Monty's (all pictured), as well as Common Rosefinches, Honey Buzzards, RBFs, Wood Warblers, Crested Tits, Ickys, Pied Flys, Osprey, and Sprosser!

3 days into Georgia trip & the weather has hardly been kind. Still we have enjoyed the Caucases. Plenty of Guldenstadts Redstarts, nice no's & views of Grouse, worked hard for Snowcock and were eventually rewarded but where are the Rosefinches? Tx @wildphotos1.bsky.social for Reds't pic.

In Oregon we have all 3 birds in the American rosefinch genus: House Finch, Purple Finch & Cassin’s Finch. They look very similar & a common request in my bird photography group is for help differentiating them. Almost always the answer is House Finch, the

Off patch for a week for our annual autumn trip to Unst. Our first full day today was somewhat challenging in a northerly gale and hail showers, with two common rosefinches at Leewart the best of the slim pickings on offer. #ukbirding

2/2. On top of that, Red-backed Shrikes, RBFs, Savi's Warblers, and a cracking Camberwell Beauty, were great companions to Black Grouse, Grey-headed Woodpecker, Marsh Warbler, Marsh Sandpiper, White-tailed Eagles, Rosefinches, breeding Green Sandpipers, Willow Tits, Pied Flys and a whole lot more!
