Renton Rounders just isn’t the same.
Here is how I look at the JJ trade. Fact, 5th rounders MOSTLY end up being backups. Some, I guess even make it big. JJ could end up being a starter by late in the season. So we gave up a 5th rounder for a potential starter and next season a backup QB. Great trade. Giants did well.

I think if you're in win-now mode like the Leafs are, without their own first rounders for the next two years, that is a good trade. Cash in your best chip to get the best player you can with it. Their only real path forward is to have Matthews playing at an MVP level again and this could help.

Trades like this remind me how much people overvalue 2nd round picks.
Something like 20% of 2nd rounders end up scoring 100+ TOTAL points in the NHL. This isn't a video game where you hire the scout with the best stats who can find late round gems. Every pick outside the top ~10 is a plinko ball.

Agreed. Though to be fair to him, the only other ~4 dmen from that class in lineups are all 1st rounders from not great teams and playing Xhekaj over him is a choice.
