When tempted to reply to trolls, remember Ficino's advice counseling Bernardo Rucellai that there's no point replying to detractors: "such a dog will keep barking until it dies, unless it joins Cerberus in barking even after death."

🔎 THE ART OF SLOW LOOKING: 👼 Note how the halos & feet belonging to the top angels are IN FRONT of the Virgin’s throne & thus appear to “cut into” and the bottom ones don't.

Day 21 of my Edwardian #AdventCalendar is this c. 1905 black silk evening dress with a white doupionné weave, that belonged to Marchesa Maria Rucellai. The dress is decorated with lace medallion inlays, blue velvet appliqués, and jet beads. Uffizi Galleries collection. #fashionhistory

🦶💋 Did you know there was a devotional practice of kissing the Virgin's foot in early Sienese art?

🔎 Take a clue from the subtly protruding foot underneath the mantle of the Rucellai Madonna by Duccio (1285).

my grad school roommate did her dissertation on Bernardo Rucellai, and she had to deal with barely-legible-penmanship handwritten Latin written in the author‘s own personal shorthand

Duccio di Buoninsegna, Madonna and Child (Rucellai Maestà) 1285. Tempera and gold on panel, 450×290 cm. Florence, Uffizi Gallery.

The work is one of the medieval jewels of the Florentine gallery, together with the Maestà of Santa Trinita by Giotto and the Maestà by Cimabue.

So great. I’ve written about this recently, and used the Rucellai as an example. A private palazzo with a public spirit.

When I was in The Ufizzi, I went straight for Giotto, I didn’t know enough about Duccio, studying him now at the moment, a fascinating character and his work is amazing. His Rucellai Madonna 💙
