To remove surface rust from chrome (NOT ALUMINUM): lightly crumple some aluminum foil and spray either the chrome surface or foil with water and aggressively scrub.

The surface rust will react with the aluminum and lift away. You’ll be left with a dirty surface so wash it normally after.
Probably a dumb question but how do you use the foil to clean it?

New blog post up on the Rust font loader now shipping in Chrome. I only had a small part in this personally but am proud of the team's work. developer.chrome.com/blog/memory-...

Chromium team developed a new font rendering library (Skrifa) as part of their Fontations library written in Rust. Skrifa now provides memory safe rendering for all web fonts since Chromium 133 for Android, ChromeOS and other Linux distributions:

Chromium finally added back JPEG-XL support after years of fucking about. Hidden behind a flag still, but that's good progress, and they're using the Rust decoder.
Google Chrome 145 Released With JPEG-XL Image Support
Back in 2022 Google deprecated and then removed JPEG-XL image support from the Chrome/Chromium browser codebase and now in 2026 it's back

he clicks the button again. you do not understand the image on the screen. he does not explain. you understand the color of blood. the color of rust. an old machine. a weapon, maybe. interlocking teeth. tarnished chrome reflecting distorted figures. he clicks the button again. you see yourself

Of course some rust is too deep/under the chrome and you can’t eliminate all of the pitting, but a lot of older steel bicycles have chromed forks and stays that look bad.

I’ve restored half a dozen bikes with “bad” chrome using this technique. It’s not perfect but looks amazing at 5’.
