#Rustweek
Maybe it would be nice to compile a list of survival rules in Netherlands and put it to some information webpage for RustWeek next year... Not everyone had a chance to live there sufficiently long to get used to it.

Since @bevy.org is now AI-boosting, another thing I have to unfollow/divest from entirely.

I honestly don't know how such a great time during Rustweek soured so quickly in the matter of a few months.

Beyond disappointing.

This is obviously apples to oranges, with TouhouFest being a volunteer-led community-run fan events funded almost entirely off of badge sales, and RustWeek having significantly higher sponsorship funding, but it's still crazy how wasteful some of these industry conferences are.

Rustweek is easily the first conference I look forward to each year.
I was asked recently about the cost of running a #rustlang conference and why the ticket prices are what they are. We figured we can just publicly share the numbers for RustWeek, in the name of #transparency. :)

And yes, RustWeek organizer gave the same answer. Lots of places have minimum catering spend and/or "free" space.

Whether or not you can bring in your own offsite catering (usually less expensive) is a big thing.
€ 75 per person per day for warm lunch with multiple options and drinks+snacks throughout the day is quite decent at a prime location like this.

The restaurant gives us exclusive access, so also serves as the break area and 'hallway track'. So part of this catering budget is just more venue rent.

I’m feeling very behind on @atmosphereconf.org (but we do have a meeting today and will do a call for volunteers on venue scouting)

If you want to get a sense of costs, see these numbers from the 2 day conference part of RustWeek.
Venue rent: € ~50k
Lunch, snacks, drinks, catering services: € ~130k
A/V services: € ~30k
Stuff we set up at the venue: € ~20k
Travel compenstation for speakers: € ~10k
External services: € ~25k (accounting, registration & payment, event management, insurance, etc.)
Miscelaneous: € ~15k

This adds up to roughly € 280k for just the two conference days. (The total for all of RustWeek is ~€ 400k.)

The money we get from sponsors covers roughly half of the costs. The other half has to be covered by tickets.

RustWeek has many subevents (conference, hackathon, unconference, workshops, Rust All Hands, etc.), but I've tried to extract just the two day conference part of RustWeek 2026:
